Village Cafe — Restaurant in Barstow

Unexpectedly great Chinese food when you least expect it! We were driving from the Grand Canyon to back to LA. Having void of any Chinese food for a week, my can't-live-with-rice-for-a-day father was dying for some rice. When we passed by Barstow's Main Street, looking very much desolated, despite shown on the map as some sort of map street, my mom spotted some Chinese characters on their windows. Peeking from outside, there's not much hope, but were we pleasantly surprised! Given we are from Hong Kong and living in Vancouver now, we have had plenty of good Cantonese Cuisine and we know the so-so's to the good ones. This place is one of those places where they still do it OLD SCHOOL - properly! Bravo to the owners & the chef! Small, intimate cafe with surprisingly good deals. The breakfast menu is simple, but not in a bad way. It makes the process easy and since the prices are quite the bargain it's easy to walk away full and satisfied. Now, on the dinner side the offer a variety of dishes but I've only had the Chinese family meals. If you still go to Canton for the restaurant style Chinese food and not the Panda Express (or Palace) type of fast food chinese food, then you need to give The Village a shot if you haven't recently. The guy was nice realistic a lil rude at times but other than that great. The club sandwich was really good the first one to hit the spot in a long time and it came with no cheese which I hate on a club it was seriously a nice old fashioned blt I have been looking for . My husband got the ham fried rice and pork fried chowmein. Which both smelled amazing and it came with fri d shrimps that looked awesome and smelled perfect.
