My favorite BBQ joint in Elgin is Southside Market & Barbeque. Their brisket, baby back ribs, and sausage are worth the stop. They opened a second location in Bastrop last fall. I have not had a chance to stop in. We normally go to Houston on 183 instead of 71 through Bastrop so we never pass by. The Bastrop location is only 25 miles from my office so it is not that far. I have to work some Saturdays and wanted some good barbecue for lunch this day. Southside Market it was.
The menu at the Bastrop location resembled the one in Elgin. I ordered moist brisket, pork spareribs, and the original sausage. I wish there was a Texas trinity combo plate though. It would have been a better value than ordering by the weight. I also added some baby back ribs and sausage slammers. When I order moist brisket, I expect slices from the point or slices where the point is attached to the flat. Sometimes I end up getting slices from the flat under the point. That is not really fatty/moist brisket. That is what I got here. The brisket had a nice smoke to it and was tender. The flavor was good, but the fat was overly rendered so the slices were on the drier side. The spareribs were fine. The smoke was on-point, but the meat was a little chewy and dry for my taste. Southside Market makes their all-beef sausage in Elgin but smoke them in Bastrop. The sausage was great. It had a nice grit and snappy casing with a good amount of fat. The baby back ribs were juicy and had an excellent smokiness to it. They were quite tasty. The star of the meal was the sausage slammer. It is composed of jalapeño and cheese inside of breakfast pan sausage with bacon wrapped around the outside and then smoked. Wow. The bites were delectable, but I had to stop myself from eating all three of them.
I think the sausage slammers might be worth the trip alone to Southside Market. Everything else is gravy. It is unless than 30 minutes away from me for lunch so I can swing by every once in a while when I have time to take a long lunch. I want to explore the other parts of the menu like the baked potato, jalapeño cheese sausage, beef ribs, chicken and pork steak. I...
Read moreMy husband and I considered using Southside BBQ for our wedding caterer, but ended up using them for our rehearsal dinner instead (not because the food wasn't amazing, just because lots of weddings in TX serve BBQ). We were so happy with this decision. Our rehearsal dinner was 70 ish people, but Southside was able to accommodate us in the covered patio with no problem. We were completely separate from the rest of the dining room and had dedicated staff members. We knew how incredible the food was from our tasting almost a year ago, but our guests were just amazed. It was awesome to introduce our families (from New Jersey, Iowa, and Missouri) to some real Texas bbq. We served brisket, smoked turkey, lamb ribs, bacon wrapped sausage, mac n cheese, coleslaw and potato salad. The lamb ribs were my favorite thing. We didn't have the best experience with our first catering gal (very nice, just not terribly responsive) but once my husband asked to work with someone else, we had great service. Robert Wells the head of catering) was delightful to work with and even brought in specific beer and wine for us, outside of what the restaurant usually serves. Lynda, the GM of this location, was also fantastic and helpful. Robert brought me an apron to wear to protect my white jumpsuit, brought in tea and water pitchers that I forgot to order, and took some group photos for us. Amazing food, service and experience. We will definitely be having a meal here whenever we pass through...
Read moreApologies in advance. We've eaten at the Bastrop location several times and unfortunately, it just doesn't compare to the Elgin original. We lived in Elgin for 2 yrs and frequently ate at The Southside Market. Loved it!! After moving and trying the location in Bastrop, sadly disappointed. My husband always orders the loaded baked potato The past 2 times he ordered it, in Bastrop, there was no butter, very little brisket, no sour cream and about 5 tiny bits of cheese. Staff corrected it, but why should we have to go and ask for what we ordered to be properly prepared in the first place? Never had that issue in Elgin, the potato was usually so overflowing that he couldn't finish it, and we recommended it to all of our friends. I'm the one who always orders the Ranch Hand. The Ranch Hand in Elgin, had enough juice with the beans so that one could make a very satisfying mixture with the onions and brisket, cheese and chives. The ones I've gotten in Bastrop have little to no juice. The beans and meat are dry and the onions and cheese and chives have nothing to help infuse them into the meal. I might as well just take a bite out of an onion, eat a spoonful of beans and gnaw on some brisket... All seperately. I would really really like to leave a good review, because we love our community and support our local businesses, and every time we go back to Southside Market in Bastrop, we hope to have a better experience than the last time, and it just...
