I’m giving 3 stars because of effort, politeness and decent service, you can tell they kind of try. The food could be WAY better for the price point. I hesitated for a long time to write this review because I don’t like bashing businesses or anything- I just believe in putting honest opinions so I did try this place several several times at various times and days. But Valentine’s Day was the last straw. I ordered pickup online and waited an hour and a half for my food. I ordered sushi only- 3 rolls and 4 sets of nigiri. Paid 80$ with the tip. Only one fried roll so nothing else should have had to be cooked. I barely got any soy sauce and absolutely no wasabi or ginger at all which was super disappointing because I love my nigiri with wasabi. I understand that wait time was going to be longer on such a busy day but I was getting increasingly upset as I sat there waiting for a pickup order while several tables were sat and serviced- people who had just gotten there! I just waited patiently though and did not say anything as I saw I wasn’t the only one noticing the slow takeout orders. I thought I was doing the right thing by ordering pickup but we should have just gone and sat down instead. The sushi was disappointing because it should have been way fresher (it was fishy tasting) and you could tell they have cross contamination because my salmon was disgusting and smelled strongly of garlic and other things they top rolls with. I almost threw up after eating it, it smelled horrible and was warm compared to the other nigiri- the only nigiri that was good was the tuna and don’t worry I kept the fried roll separate on the way home so that definitely wasn’t the cause of the warm fish. I’ve also tried their orange chicken dish and general tso chicken and a couple other things like the fried rice and they’re all mediocre at best. Nothing saves well. If you go for those things just go down the road to Chinese Dragon. Long story short: save your money, you can get a better deal for fresher sushi in Austin. Just...
Read moreKyoto is the genuine Japanese restaurant I didn’t dare to dream for in Bastrop, Texas. Honestly, I like this place even better than my go-to spots in Austin. The environment was clean, cozy, and very attractive. Small, but that makes the feel even better, in my opinion. The prices are very reasonable. The staff are quick, understanding, and very friendly--the owner is always nearby with a smile.
I’ve been there twice now, and everything I tried was homemade and delicious. The gyoza (potstickers) was good, the onion soup was lick-the-bowl awesome, the fried rice was as epic as any hibachi house, and the sesame chicken was crisp and juicy and perfect. The only thing that was kinda average, in my opinion, was the egg drop soup.
But my favorite part was the “Bastrop” sushi roll: Shrimp tempura (fried shrimp) Snow crab Avocado Cream cheese Whole thing fried in sweet batter Covered in subtle, delicious white cheese
They also offer hibachi, many other sushi rolls (Texas roll, Austin roll, cowboy roll), and huge menu. The menu is very clear about what fish is cooked or uncooked, and about what’s spicy. They also offered sashimi and classic Chinese/“Asian” favorites, like General Tso’s.
Five full, shiny stars. Can’t recommend this...
Read moreThis is a funny review to write: we are from out of town and have eaten here twice in the last six months with our friends who are local and regulars. Food and service was perfect when we visited last July. On Saturday, December 29 at about 7pm in a booth in the SW corner of the restaurant, the food was excellent: edamame, salads, won ton soup, Tiger roll and another roll...but where was the escolar sashimi we ordered on the order form? When we asked where it was, our waitress almost argued that we hadn't ordered it (why? It's another $$ added to the tab and her tip?) - she said they had a lot of orders...and she needed to review our order form to make sure we actually ordered what we asked for. The escolar finally arrived and was yummy. Then we verbally ordered one last spicy tuna roll. Never appeared...plates were cleared, no further were drinks asked about...and still no spicy tuna roll. The bill came and included the never-served spicy tuna roll that never appeared. Really? Our friends joked that the owner or manager wasn't there and that's why we had sub-par service...maybe? I'm sure they and we will return...but when the cat's away, the mice need to make things right. Our server...
