We had been anxiously anticipating our visit to this newly renovated restaurant and were not disappointed with the decorum that obviously had been splurged on for the details of the great atmosphere that has been created. We especially like the piano bar / fireplace sitting area near the bar-lounge area off to the left of the entrance of the facility. We got to enjoy this area since we arrived a bit earlier than our reservation waiting for the other couple we were meeting. The first bottle of wine we requested (a French Rose) was answered with "we are out of this selection, but we have another great option that is similar to offer you" (a bottle that was a little over double the cost of our preferred selection) of which we declined and selected a second choice of a French wine that we like that was available on the wine list. Once the rest of our party arrived we got an appealing booth space with an impressive chandelier hovering above the table. The brunch menu was what was available (Sunday) so we selected the hummus & Halloumi cheese, Thai Lettuce Wraps, and the Ahi-Tuna-TarTar for appetizers for the 4 of us to sample a little of each. The Thai Lettuce Wraps were good of which we all liked best of the 3 selections. The hummus & Halloumi cheese was okay as well but was just a basic hummus with cubed grilled Halloumi cheese and a splash of diced cucumbers that was not proportionate to the serving size of hummus and pita bread ratio. As for the Tuna Tar Tar it was presented in a stem glass with a light sauce that was mostly at the bottom of the 8 or so cubes of tuna that was a bit flavorless outside of the tuna's natural flavor that was served with crisped pieces that were not sufficient of supporting the large tuna chunks being dipped with. (crispy wontons would probably work better or some other crispy crouton / toast points / sea salt dusted crisp would have been better) -- For the second course we ordered the Smash Burger, Grits and Grillades, Short Rib Grip Bowl, and Madame Vivian. Starting with the "Smash Burger" it was basically the size of a Mcdonald's cheese burger....."smashed" with a side of cubed fried potatoes....disgraceful for $16 at a restaurant the touts "high end" in their description of quality of food (deviled eggs also are NOT something that comes to mind as high end gourmet...Just Sayin) While the Grits and Grillades offered a little more texture it sampled more like pulled pork in a tomato based sauce (think pork sloppy joes from childhood days) over gruyere flavored grits. The Short Rib Grit was basically a repeat of Grits & Grillades but with rib meat.....(if you lived in the 70's you'll understand that these were staples for large families on a budget) - On to the Madame Vivian.....just a basic Croque Madame by another name.....basically not bad but just an okay presentation of a classic French breakfast staple. While fancy descriptions sound good, assigning them to dishes on a menu does not make them gourmet dishes......creativity using ingredients that are not commonly found at other establishments prepared and presented in a way that is unmatched dictates "high end" prices that most foodies like my self would not even blink to pay the asking price for. -- Summary: We loved the atmosphere first and foremost which was unmatched at other establishments without being too over the top......we loved the great service by our waiter Aiden whom was very attentive and precise with delivery of his caring for our needs as the restaurant's guest. -- Unfortunately the food choices were basically repeats of what can be similarly found at several other establishments in the area....for less cost. Basically we will return and recommend, BUT ONLY for cocktails in the lounge / bar area to socialize with friends occasionally. (Total Bill was $302.36 & we...
Read moreI’m so excited for the Colonel’s Club.
This was my first visit. I have not been able to get in because it has been so difficult with reservation restrictions at night. I was able to get in for a late lunch today.
The chicken lettuce wraps had real deal chicken which I appreciated very much. At other places it’s more like a mulch and this was deconstructed. Nice touch.
The cauliflower… Wow !! The pictures don’t do it justice. Perfectly cooked. Not too tender not to al dente. A nice dipping sauce on the side as well.
In the restaurant business, you are at the next level when you were doing things that cannot be replicated at your house. This is what I experienced today. In particular, I’m talking about the colonel’s club sandwich as well as the fish that I had today.
The grilled fish romesco (Bass fish of the day) was served over blistered vegetables, cauliflower puree, charred onions, pecan romesco. I wish my pictures would show the color contrasts !!! The colors were diverse for the sauces yellow and orange !!
The Colonel’s club sandwich was a fried shrimp, apple smoked bacon, crushed avocado, lettuce, tomato, house pickle, colonel's sauce on texas toast. That bread was truly artisan. Light tender and airy. Huge shrimp that were so tender, which is tough to do.
Lots of talk about 2 million spent on the decor. Well, let me tell you they got their moneys worth, and it is a site to see. The bathrooms were so impressive. The decor was top-tier. I think one of the reasons it cost so much was the amount of square footage.
The private dining table in the private room was so impressive. I was able to get a sneak peek between cleanings.
The quiet spaces around the bar area are so quaint. You need to check it out. Very impressive coffee machine. The fireplace was a nice touch.
You definitely need to get by and check it out when you can. Parking was not an issue as I parked under the overpass and it was not a long walk.
At night, I would try to Uber to make things easier and also don’t be in a hurry when you go. This place is top-tier. The food seems to be made to order so you want to respect those time constraints.
Rumor has it that there may be some paid parking in the vicinity as long-term plans. The plans may include a walking path to the garden district. Seems like there is a lot going on in that...
