Disappointing sums it up. There's many problems but I'll start with the good first.
Pros: The sushi is fresh, well made and the proportions are generous.
Food arrived relatively quickly.
The menu is concise but there's a good amount of variety. I just wish they had more actual sushi listed on the menu.
Cons: The menu items and sushi are overpriced for the area in my opinion. At $4 per nigiri, $8 for a pair, even with generous proportions, you can pay half the amount for double the sushi nigiri elsewhere. And if I'm going to pay $4 for tea then I really expect a pot of tea. Why would you only serve one mug of tea for $4???? That's bonkers. Serving a $0.50 cent pot of tea for your customers really would go a long way to make this place feel more like a restaurant and less like a fast food joint.
Speaking of fast food vibes, having to go to the register to pay is awkward. Just take the check!
The menu itself is a problem. It consists of a single mounted digital tablet that you cannot move at the far end of each table. I watched a group of five spend over TEN minutes just trying to put in their order. My partner and I also had to wait and take turns looking over the menu. You're basically just giving your tables one menu to share. It's not a classy vibe. I suggest a trip back to paper menus until you can figure that one out.
The music is terrible and way too loud.
Offering free food for a *5 review isn't a good look.
My mother was a waitress so I have a lot of respect for people in the service industry, but I have to be harsh on this one. The service was nonexistent. And yet of course they still ask for a tip. To clarify, I'm not blaming our waitress, and I still always tip, but I didn't tip anywhere near as much as I could have if the service did anything to make my experience better. This is more of the fault of the establishment for the lack of service...
Read moreSo many delectable choices here at Bethany Sushi and was the perfect spot to get lunch this busy Friday. I came here with my partner and was greeted by the hostess who sat us down. There were so many options on the menu that intrigued us. My partner ordered the sesame chicken bento, and I chose a variety of things, because honestly there were so many I wanted to try. I ordered the tunavo rollz (tuna avocado), ika (squish), ikura (salmon eggs), and mango tango special roll (mango, asparagus, salmon, tuna, avocado, crab meat and rice paper). The highlight of the show had to be the ika, but maybe I'm a bit biased since ika has always been my favorite. The lime salt was a nice touch! The mango tango had peeked my interest when I first noticed it on the menu and it did not disappoint. Though I would say if you're not the person to mix sweet and savory, this is probably not the dish for you. I felt like I was recreating the cheese and strawberry scene from ratatouille when remy decided to experiment two different flavors. Honestly I think the combination of the savory fish and mango and veggies were delicious and complemented each other. The mango sauce is a nice additional touch where it makes the roll tastes more like a savory sweet dessert. It also tastes very good with soy sauce wasabi mixture as well. My partner also enjoyed his sesame chicken bento and was pleased about the portions he received. He also wanted to add that it was quite scrumptious and was just what he was looking for to start off his friday! Overall, the experience, service, and food were top knotch at bethany sushi and we'll be back soon for another...
Read moreI understand the price for this place will be higher due to location. However, I was really surprised with the poor food quality. I have been to a lot of sushi restaurants. The food quality of this place is even worse than some of the convenient stores. First of all, the wasabi looks weird. It's my first time seeing wasabi with bluish color. I immediately looked for my own wasabi in the fridge and hope the food will be ok. It is not. Shrimp is really dry, and having weird and unpleasant taste. Salmon is not firm and even a little bit sticky, which indicates it's not fresh anymore. I even spit out the salmon roe after the first bite. Salmon roe is marinated product and usually lasts for a while. I can't imagine how long it may have passed its best by date for bad taste like this. Creamy scallop is okay, to be honest. Thank God! I also ordered some cooked rolls. The food is not unfresh but the quality is still poor. I ordered a crunchy roll which is deep fried in any other sushi places. However, it is actually a California roll with bread crumbs on top of it. What a surprise of creativity!
I'm not comparing this place to the top sushi restaurants in Portland. Even for low end sushi places like yuki, mioga, and Hana, I only think they are not very tasty but never worried about their food quality. I rarely post any reviews. However, I don't understand where those five-starred reviews are coming from, and need to give my honest opinion. I will not go to this...
