I'm done with Jax.
With that said-- I grew up going to Jax Grill as a kid in Bellaire in the early 90s, fantastic memories, great food and atmosphere. I was a picky kid, but you could guarantee I'd find something good to eat which my parents loved. When I moved back to Houston for school in 2009 Jax was my first stop, still decent!
However the past few years they've really gone downhill. I keep wanting to give them a chance but I'm done. For my birthday my wife paid $50 for a chicken fried steak that had shrunk to a burger sized patty inside of a soggy steamed batter and bland fajitas + dessert. I should have called it quits then, but I'm apparently a masochist. I still go back for the Southwest Fajita bowl on occasion but there's usually something wrong with it, typically stale chips, etc.. Today however I went for the fajita bowl and fried okra to-go. I live blocks away, less than 5 minutes.. everything in the fajita bowl was cold, or tepid at best, chips stale, probably not food safe if it was sitting out for who knows how long. Plus the real nail in the coffin was the fried okra, while delicious it shouldn't cost nearly $8 for a previously frozen fried vegetable.
I'm absolutely upset my once wonderful neighborhood restaurant has fallen so far. I'm writing this review while I reheat my meal I should have been eating 20 minutes ago.
Updating to add: beware of ridiculous up charges if you're an adult who wants to order off the kids menu. Some people dont want or need a ton of food but need to eat. Why upcharge for ordering off the kids menu for a simple quick burger when it ends up costing the same as a full sized burger and fries? Absolutely unreasonable.
Update no.2: forgot to mention how unwelcoming the front end staff has gotten. Sour looks and very unfriendly even though I'm a (former) somewhat regular. Zero enthusiasm and it reflects poorly on the already mediocre brand image. The more I think about how this place has declined the more disappointed I am.
RIP Jax, just in time...
Read moreMe and my coworkers thought Jax was a great place to eat at until the way I was treated today when I came in first I called on the phone asked the lady What does the Macho Nacho consist of she did not say beans When I came in and saw it came with beans I immediately told the cashier Can I get it with no beans She immediately turned to the cook with the cross eyes and started speaking Spanish Sorry I dont know his name she then said no it's too late. When I asked for management she said ok we change this time I then told her i was very sorry She did not respond They did fix the nachos with no beans THANKS However when I got in the car and tried them they were not what I expected I then called back inside restaurant Same cashier answered I asked for management she told me she was busy I was on hold for a whole 5 mins. Wow Manager came to phone and I explain to her what happened she said bring it in and u can get something else When I came back in the cashier mumbled something else to the cooks in Spanish the whole cooking staff looked at me therefore I know she said something about me I really didn't appreciate the way I was treated by the staff. I DIDN'T WELCOME IT AND I WILL NOT TOLERATE IT My coworkers and I Wil not be back in that restraunt until they do something with the horrible staff and we will recommend the whole city of Bellaire not to eat at this restraunt Great food but the cashier and cooking staff need more people skills PLEASE don't eat at Jax u will get treated badly The cashier who was there on Sunday July 26 needs to be TERMINATED I called to speak with the general manager I was on hold for 10 mins The same cashier never put the manager on the phone I demand a call back immediately from the general manager of...
Read moreThis is a really nice restaurant. The atmosphere is friendly and homey. I spoke to a couple of tables before ordering and asked what their favorite meals were. As a stranger to stranger interaction it was as if we were neighbors. I got several different suggestions from the fish and shrimp to hamburgers to huge pieces of cake or onion rings the size of softballs. All of the servings were huge, so bring your appetite or share with someone. My sister and I shared. We ordered a regular cheeseburger and ff. So glad we shared! Neither of us could have finished one by ourselves. The hamburger was quality meat and looked hand made. And the best thing? No salt. You season them yourselves at the table as well as put your own condiments on. What a blessing for 2 people who can't eat salt. The restroom was clean as was all of the dining area. There was a very nice man who constantly came by to take empty plates or offer to get anything we needed. That was a really nice touch. I am torn as to which plate I will get next time, the fish and shrimp that really looked so good! Or the Reuben which is my personal favorite sandwich. Either way I am going to get those onion rings because I can still see and smell them. Y'all need to stop by Jacks and have a bite. But bring your wallet. Maybe their prices are normal? But as two mid 60's people we had a little bit of sticker shock. On the other hand the servings are double size so you definitely get your money's worth. And 4 people can order 2 plates and probably everyone will leave full. If you are a big eater, you are going to be so 😁. I'm sorry that I always forget to...
