We stopped by the Colophon this evening to have a drink, a bit of desert and listen to the 4 part harmony groups sing on the stage outside in the green.
Unfortunately our experience was far from stellar, especially given the prices they charge. 30 minutes after being seated we received water, and almost an hour after we sat down, we received a beer, a margarita and they forgot my son's soda (another 10 minutes to scrounge that up!). The place wasn't packed, I would guess just understaffed and poorly managed?
We also ordered a carrot cake that was dry on the outside and not cooked in the middle. My wife's margarita was literally three sips (For $9) and contained virtually no alchohol, just 90% ice in a 3 inch diameter glass about 7 inches tall.
The staff (when we saw them) was friendly enough and quick to apologize profusely for the long wait and poor service, but strangely, never did anything about either one. We got the standard, "How was everything" we answered politely and honestly, and that got us the, "OK, thanks for coming in, I'll get your check." Why ask if you don't want to hear it? I think that explains part of the problem!
Why did we stay? Good question, it wasn't the food or service, it was that there was a great music fest going on the stage and we were going to sit somewhere, so why not (I can now think of several reasons)! I think we just kept believing it has got to get better (the Colophon experience) because it can't get worse, but it didn't. Shame on us!
Numerous tables around us had the same issue going on and several were smarter than us and got out with their wallets intact.
I'd love to give a better review, but for the $$$ pricing, spend your money elsewhere. I expect people to work as hard for my...
Read moreSome months ago I had extensive dental work done, before and after which I was unable to eat out (for about 8 months). When I finally did venture out (at the beginning of June), with my nephew for a late lunch, we landed on the Colophon Cafe and I ordered a burger (I was so excited to have a burger after such a long time of not being able to eat one). They don't serve mineral water (?), so I ordered a beer. When the server brought it, as she left, I realized she hadn't asked me how I wanted my burger so I called her back over and politely said "You didn't ask me how I want my burger." She said; "We serve them medium-well." like that was the end of the conversation. She had NOT informed me WHEN I ORDERED THE BURGER, nor was it posted on the menu. I was really embarrassed to have to explain to her that I COULD NOT EAT WELL DONE MEAT. She stared at me as if I were really inconveniencing her and said NOTHING (She was rather strange with me even before I ordered anything. I thought perhaps I was imagining it 'til my nephew mentioned it himself). I looked at their menu and couln't find anything on it that I could eat. So we decided to leave. I clearly hadn't touched the beer; hadn't even picked it up. Our waitress said; "I can't comp you the beer". I thought 'Fine. I am NEVER coming back here. The entire experience was simply unfeeling and unprofessional. Instead, we went up the street to 'Le Chat Noir' and there, I had THE MOST AMAZING and SUCCULENT BURGER! Best of all, we had a lovely, friendly and funny waitress. Because of the traumatic and painful dental situation lasting well over a year, I was really nervous about eating out. Thankfully, Le Chat Noir made me feel welcome and at ease, and the food and service...
Read moreWe ordered 4 eggs for one person, a snickerdoodle, and a coffee ($8.15 for a small mocha), sitting outside. We got the snickerdoodle and coffee relatively soon after ordering (within 10 minutes of ordering), but the eggs took about 45 minutes, and we asked 3 three separate times how the eggs were coming along. Each time we were told it would be soon, but that was clearly not the case. I think they must've forgotten about us or something, although seeing as we got our other two orders, I'm not sure. We were very polite about asking and were not demanding, just trying to get some basic customer service. For the price and wait, the eggs were ok, but they were just eggs. They also gave us toast with the eggs even though we only asked for eggs, and charged us for it. They at least (said) that they would take the coffee off instead of the toast, as we saved more that way, but we never got a copy of the receipt to confirm at the time. They also seemed to have a generally negative attitude towards us, not sure if that's because they were working on the 4th or because we were expecting basic customer service. If you want decent food and are ok waiting almost an hour for basic orders while being forgotten (or ignored), then this...
