Juan's Place — Restaurant in Berkeley

I gave this a 1 star because you have to give it something to write a review. We arrived about 20 minutes after they opened. Nobody greeted us --- the place was a dark empty cave and finally a woman appeared from the back of the place and told us to sit anywhere. We were waiting for some others to join us so we chose an appropriately sized table. I use a walker and I positioned my walker and eased my body into a chair (I have advanced, early onset osteoporosis and arthritis). This woman had the audacity to MOVE MY WALKER to a place across the room because she felt it was in her way. She did this without asking me or saying anything at all to me except grimacing as she handed me a menu. I had to shout at her to bring it back since I need it to do anything at all --- like getting up to use the bathroom or walking out if the place caught fire. The food was meh at best. The table salsa tasted like cold ketchup and had literally no kick to it. The tortillas arrived late to the meal. My husband reports his huevos rancheros were not memorable in any way. My tostada was okay, but not so much so that I'd go back for another one. Mobility impaired people be very wary --- I've never had anyone in my whole life touch my walker without asking permission. This b** clearly likes things her way and hasn't got clue one as to how to work with disabled people. Terrible place --- memorable only for the rotten experience. When the other members of our party showed up, one of them --- who goes there often --- noted that the service seemed "off." She hadn't been there when the walker incident happened, but even she found the wait staff to be "off." Big plates of hearty food. Lots of choice on the menu, so tortas, mole, shellfish, and more - just what you would want to see. Be sure to look around for the specials; they are on a smallish chalk board toward the back of the dining room but I'm not sure about the bar area which also has a ton of tables. The walls of the dining room are covered with appreciation from Cal and other sports teams and competitors and many others, so you can well imagine that this is food that is not only tasty but will sustain you. The bar selection looks immense, and I was quite pleased to have the choice of major brands such as Corona, Tecate, and more from a bottle, can, or draft with my meal. I got nice thick corn tortillas to create my burros. The waiter added pork at the end of the meat choices (I'm not sure if I saw it on the menu), and it made a delicious combination with the "green sauce" enchiladas (yes, the menu actually said that). I have to warn you that I may be biased as my wife and I used to go to Juan's regularly when we were much, much younger, and when I mentioned to my brother I had been there he was very pleasantly stunned: "Wow, they're still open? I used to go there all the time when I was at Cal!" So still great and highly recommended, especially if you're an active sort. I was there during the quiet of the afternoon, but I'll be going back soon in the evening to check on how my plate tastes with the sound of happy voices filling my ears, and possibly share an entire pitcher of Corona with a bunch of friends and our food. Have been going here since 1980 but not lately. I'd just finished working on my boat when I sat down to study the menu. I hadn't waited to be seated but looked for an outlet to charge my phone, maybe this is what set the rest in motion. Very little salsa compared to previous years but very tasty and the chips were excellent. Menu seems different and as I was enjoying the chips I carefully studied the menu. All of a sudden I was being rushed to order like they assumed I just wanted to eat the free chips and not have any money. This continued ruining my enjoyment of both. Finally I was pushed to order ... Plate hot food less so enchilada sauce bland but all looked good and I said so. But again rice warm at best etc. But that is all minor. Three different people were waiting on me like none wanted to be responsible for me and a busboy older man even blew his nose into a bag or something. Still I love Juan's and tried to make the most of it. My final request for more chips and salsa brought older ones not delicious like the first. The woman waiter placed them on the far edge of the table like she didn't want to get near me. I assume they have a problem with homeless doing what they assumed I was doing..
