I am going to begin with saying out of concern for my elderly parents, I will remain anonymous. Guess not my name is on blast! Oh well!!! Unfortunately they go to this place, and based on my last experience I would never subject them to whatever the hell these pathetic people are capable of. Here it is. I have been a resident and patron at this diner as long as its been open. I have suggested it, requested it over any other place. Up until this past Saturday, I would never believe it myself, if I hadn’t seen the most disgusting behavior from ownership MYSELF. We were a table of 3 sitting directly in front of the register. The two at the register (owner/employee) I recognize from other times frequenting the diner. Tall man dark hair thin, female glasses short hair. You know who you are. As we ate, there were plenty of people who enjoyed the meal and service as we did til the end! As we were eating, a young BIRACIAL couple walked in to pay money at this diner , and to enjoy each others company. They were both dressed impeccably, her being in $100 shorts alone! They proceeded on, and I thought nothing about it, except how cute of a young couple they were. Seemed respectful, he seemed to be very gentlemanly, opened the door…all of the above. They finished their meal before us, and were at the register to pay. Now here is where I listen, and may internally feel a certain way about what someone says, generally Its non of my business. The first thing that grabbed my attention was when the taller man behind the register began to interact with the couple. Mainly he was speaking to the man, who was black. He must have asked where he was from, because the man responded with, “Im from Jamaica.” The man behind the counter said, “well your looking for jerk chicken then.” Followed up with, (what most narcissists do) “Im just kidding!” Haha! Non of my business. The couple leave, and in my head I was thinking this day and age man there are certain things you just dont say. EVEN IF YOUR A FOREIGNER YOURSELF! Ok, moving on. Another patron (older white man) left his wallet at the table, forgetting it to pay his bill. He voiced that he “was looking for his wallet.” The man behind the counter, that obviously wanted to go further than just jerk chicken, LOUDLY says, “yeah you see how fast he got out of here, didnt you!!?! The man questioned what he said, completely unaware of what I had just encountered. The guy behind the counter says to the man that forgot his wallet that he “thought” he was talking about the black man stealing his wallet. Appalling ! As this was transpiring my mouth was still on the floor, and all I could say was, “WOW!?” I am not a weirdo, Im generally not sensitive, after all Im a Jersey girl! However… I will never ever for the rest of my life and I believe I have quite a few left, will EVER set foot in that disgusting place. We are all guilty of passing judgment, creating an opinion, and sometimes being prejudice about certain ethnicities and cultures. GUILTY. But you are clearly in an at least a managerial position with customers of allllll different backgrounds and sizes and that was your choice? I served in 2001 when the planes rammed through our back yard. It’s clear your of middle eastern descent… should I assume your a terrorist and boycotted your place before I or any other AMERICAN FROM BERLIN, NJ gave you a chance? Sir and ma'am, whatever your names are or your position in that establishment, your behavior is atrocious and the best part is that you know . I’m sure lady you definitely know I saw and heard it all, because not only did you look into my eyes, but I happened to be the only person you did not acknowledge or ask how our experience was, because I would have blew your cover and verbally lit you up light the fourth of July! I may not make or break your success's in the Berlin diner but you have destroyed all the awesome things I have ever had to say about your place. And know for as long as you have been in that location, so have I. And I honestly hope your diner falls...
Read moreMy family and I had lunch there recently. Our meals were a mix of good and bad.
First the good. The waitress was nice.It was very crowded and there was a wait to get a table, but she helped speed our service along and got all of our orders correct.
One of had the fried seafood combo and enjoyed most of it. I had the broiled seafood combo. The scallops were so overcooked that they tasted like hard rubber balls and were browned on one side and raw looking on the other. Inedible. The shrimp were very chewy, but the flavor was good. The salmon was dry. The stuffed flounder was overcooked, but the crab filling was very tasty.
Both meals came with salads and two sides. The salads looked okay, other than the huge, clumsy chunks of cucumber, but we couldn't eat them after the first bite. The croutons were very stale and both of our dressings were terrible. One of us asked for Ranch and the other for Thousand Island. Both just tasted like plain mayo.
The sides were mashed potatoes, fries, potato salad and coleslaw. The coleslaw was just a dry pile of cabbage, with no dressing on it. The potato salad had hard, only partially cooked potatoes in it. Neither could be eaten. The fries were nice and crispy. The mashed potatoes were a tiny portion, but it tasted okay. We asked for Hollandaise sauce to dip our food in. It was split, but the flavor was very good once I added a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
Another member of our party ordered an omelet that was okay. It came with hash browns that looked like diced, boiled potatoes. They weren't even browned. Another item that wasn't eaten.
We asked what the desserts were, but none of them sounded tempting. The same few boring cakes that every diner seems to have.
I tried to be specific, because I wish I could recommend this restaurant. It would have been a good meal, if the cook has taken just a little care with the food. That crab filling might be good enough to go back for. I just hope the fish it comes in is cooked...
Read moreWe’ve been coming here for a few years. The food here is pretty good. The wait staff is always friendly, and on top of things. However, the last time we were here, Memorial Day (yesterday), the man who was working at the front acted like a rude jerk. When we walked in the only thing he said was “two?” I answered yes. He grabbed two menus, led us to a table, tossed the menus on the table, and walked away. No “your server will be right with you”, nothing. I have no idea what was going on but it took quite a bit before our server came over, which is unusual, especially since there were hardly any other customers in there. She was very nice, as usual. When I finished I had barely drank any of my iced tea so I asked for a to go cup. When we went up to pay the same miserable acting man was at the register. He took my check and never said a single word. No “how was everything?”, not one word. He didn’t even make eye contact. Then I asked him if I could please have another cup to double cup my drink, as the one I had was getting kind of mushy. He finally spoke! Very snotty he said “Well that’s bc you’re not using it for what it’s intended for!” Then “it’s for hot drinks, not cold ones.” What the heck?! I didn’t even respond bc it wasn’t worth it. I used what the server brought me! If you have a diner that serves cold drinks maybe you should have the proper cups that are intended for that! We won’t be going back there. I have no idea what his problem was that night, but there are too many decent diners in NJ with good food, and excellent customer service. I gave 5 stars for service bc the wait staff always does a good job, and...
