If you find yourself anywhere near Bethesda, Maryland, do yourself a favor—pause, breathe, and make your way to the crown jewel of Indian cuisine, a place that doesn’t just serve food, but serves soul. This isn’t just a restaurant. This is a culinary sanctuary. A celebration of spice, tradition, and hospitality. A temple to taste. And at the center of it all is the man, the myth, the legend—VIKAS.
From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with aromas that feel like a warm embrace from a long-lost homeland. Rich cardamom, smoky cumin, and the gentle sweetness of simmering onions swirl together like a symphony for the senses. The lighting is soft, the music subtle, but what really shines is the food.
Let me start with the butter chicken—no, scratch that, the velvet of the gods. It’s a dish so balanced, so decadent, and so heartwarming it could make a grown man cry. Each bite tells a story of generations, of grandmothers stirring pots over wood fires, of midnight feasts and wedding day platters. Then there’s the biryani, which could very well be listed on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list. Fluffy, fragrant, and impossibly flavorful, it carries a depth that whispers of Hyderabad and Lucknow and everywhere in between.
The naan arrives, pillowy and blistered just right, begging to be torn apart and dipped into luscious curries. The lamb vindaloo doesn’t just deliver heat—it delivers character. Fire with finesse. Passion on a plate.
And while the food is the star, it’s Vikas who makes the experience unforgettable. His presence is calm but commanding. He doesn’t just run a restaurant—he curates a memory. You can tell this is personal for him. Every dish feels like a love letter to India. Every guest, a welcomed member of his extended family. Ask for recommendations and watch his eyes light up as he talks about each dish’s origin, spice profile, and story.
This restaurant doesn’t just serve Indian food—it defines it. And not just in Bethesda. Not just in Maryland. Not just in the DMV. We’re talking world-class.
I’ve dined in Delhi. I’ve eaten in Mumbai. I’ve explored the food stalls of Chennai and the rooftops of Jaipur. But somehow, this humble spot in Bethesda rises to the top of the list. It’s Indian cuisine at its finest, transcending geography, borders, and expectations.
So if you’re hungry—not just for food, but for feeling—come here. If you want to know what love tastes like when it’s ladled out in a copper bowl, served with warm bread and a knowing smile, come here.
And when you do, raise your glass to Vikas. Because this? This is more than...
Read moreWe were two couples. We had reservations and they seated us promptly. Inside it is cozy but not crowded and the decor is very tasteful with carved wood and some crystal beading. The waitress was lovely and very helpful in suggestions of favorites. We enjoyed 4 different naans with our meal, although one order would be enough for 2 people, we were planning on leftovers. The naans were warm and soft and delicious. Plain, butter, bullet with hot chilies..true to its name, and one other that was crisp on the outside and soft inside. We also ordered a paneer with peppers which were four large cubes grilled with peppers and onions, we all loved them, like nothing I have tasted before. The portions are large, but being our first time here, we had to try many things. There was a side of a green pepper sauce and a raita yogurt sauce appetizer that was plentiful and delicious as well, great to accompany the naan. We also ordered a crispy spinach appetizer which was refreshing and so tasty mixing savory and sweet, some pomegranate and minced mango were part of the dish, so good and better than I have had elsewhere. For the mains, we ordered chicken tikka masala fantastic and flavorful, moist chicken that didn’t need a knife to cut, plenty of sauce that if we didn’t have so many other dishes I would have sopped up all of it to enjoy. We ordered 2 lamb dishes one with layers of cardamom that were complex and delicious as well and another chicken dish with a cashew sauce all with layers of delicious spices. All were great and enough for four of us with leftovers. The sauces were plentiful and again would have been a meal in itself to enjoy with the naan. We were full but talked ourselves into enjoying a dessert to be shared, an Indian ice cream with rice noodles. Very refreshing end to a flavorful meal. There were several pages to the menu with at least two that were vegetarian. We will definitely go back and try other dishes, but will be hard pressed not to re order our initial suggestions. The owner was very magnanimous and spoke to us after our meal to ensure we loved everything which we did. The price was reasonable for four of us. One dessert, one beer, four naans, two appetizers and four entrees. We left very full, satisfied and with leftovers! All for...
Read moreMy family and I are very critical of Indian food being Indian ourselves, and honestly I had no idea what to expect coming to this restaurant. I’m from NJ and we have a ton of great Indian restaurants in NYC and NJ. A member of my family suggested to go out to Virraaj and it was such a pleasant surprise. First off, it was such an elegantly designed restaurant with hand-selected detail in every corner. We sat in the side room in the back, which was really nice and cozy for our family.
So to start off the service was fantastic. The owner treated us like family and made us feel at home the whole time. He offered different suggestions for drinks/food based on our background and tastes. Now, the food (we had a ton and were stuffed) was so good and probably some of the best I’ve had in the states. From the cute presentation to the quality of the ingredients to the cooking perfection...it was all just very impressive. We ordered in a unique way where we had one item at time and enjoyed that and then on to the next one. Some of our favorite items from the night: Aam palak chat, Veg Samosa, laajawab tandoori lamb chops, Amritsari fish, raunak seekh kebab, Punjabi teekha kebab, Maa Ali Daal. Also the Naans were so flaky and flavorful. You can tell the chef doesn’t sacrifice any quality in the cooking. Each one of these dishes had such a unique profile and presentation that we never got tired of seeing something new on the next item to come.
And lastly, we had green tea and kulfi to close out the meal. The kulfi was so creamy and didn’t have any of that freezer burn type taste that you get at other restaurants. The green tea was as flavorful as my moms growing up with a classic chanak display.
Honestly, I can’t wait to go back when I come back from NJ. This may just be one of my favorite Indian restaurants. And I definitely see this becoming the best in the area. The quality of the food and the exceptional service speak for itself. I wish I took some pictures but i’d rather you be as pleasantly surprised as I was. My mouth is watering just thinking and writing this review. Hope you get the chance to go out and try Virraaj. You...
