In a search for “best lobster roll in Beverly,” Joe’s On A Roll came up in the Google search results. I checked out the reviews and decided to give it a shot. This is kind of an out-of-the-way location that used to be a food truck before it became a permanent building. There are about four parking spaces in front of the building and no seating indoors. There is a bench out front that would allow for a place to sit and eat, however, I opted just eat my lunch in my car. This is the kind of place that when you see it, you know it’s kind of like a gem for the locals and the neighborhood. There was a walk up window with menus posted beside it and I placed my order for a hot buttered lobster roll combo. In about four minutes, my order was ready and the service was friendly and fast. They take cash as well as credit/debit at Joe’s. The chips offered were either a bag of Cape Cod plain or Salt and Vinegar and there were various cans of soda, tea and bottles of water available. I opted for the Salt and Vinegar chips and an Arnold Palmer tea. All of that was just as expected, but the absolute hit was the lobster roll. This is sometimes called a Connecticut style lobster roll and it was definitely delicious. The lobster was plentiful, buttery and so tender. It just melted in my mouth and was just perfect. The bun was toasted just right and I’d guess this roll had about 4 ounces of lobster, which was not bad for $20. They do offer the lobster roll in the traditional cold mayo variety, but I was just in the mood for something different and I would absolutely order this again. This lobster roll was the perfect size for a lunch portion and I will definitely be back the next time I...
Read moreWent for a lobster roll and clam chowder today. Ordered a fried plate too. The lobster I was served was rancid. It smelled like ammonia and tasted like chemicals. The woman at the register said that was butter both I and my partner were smelling. Butter does NOT smell like ammonia. I made the mistake of letting them remake it instead of getting my money back. The second one also smelled like chemicals and ammonia. At that point I took the loss because I was confused and experiencing second-hand embarrassment that they would serve food that way with a straight face. I suggest you date your products and check your fridge temps because that was a terrible experience for $60. The fried food tasted fresh and I was happy with it. The clam chowder was gelantinous and tasted terrible. Will be updating if my partner and I get sick. Truly do not understand because this place has such good reviews, but to lie to me and tell me the butter is what smells like ammonia is crazy. Then give me a SECOND one that smells the same is...
Read moreI chose Joe's On A Roll based on the mostly-great Google reviews. I agree that their lobster is excellent quality and delicious, and that they serve a decent portion of it. But I found that the lobster roll's overall flavor was ruined by inexplicably grilling the "roll" (which is disappointingly nothing more than a small slice of generic sandwich bread) with Pam cooking spray, or some other nasty-tasting cooking oil. They're already serving the lobster with delicious, REAL butter on it, why not just grill the bread with the same real butter, too?? Also, if you decide to eat it there on-site, sitting at one of the two, tiny tables or in your vehicle, you should know that they don't offer or have any wet-naps to clean your greasy fingers with when you're done, and there's no customer bathroom to...
