It was okay.
My fiancé and I decided to drop in to Ohana Poke during our trip to Billings. After reading all the great reviews, we were excited to see what the hype was about. Truthfully, I'm still not quite sure.
Let's start with food. I ordered a BYO small bowl with: 1/2 white rice, 1/2 sushi rice Edamame, Green Onions, Avocado & Krab Salad 1/2 Hawaiian Poke, 1/2 Spicy Tuna Poke Spicy Mayo Pickled Ginger & Furikake
The serving size was perfect. A small bowl was more than enough to satisfy my hunger after driving for a few hours. The mixins and toppings were good too. Fresh ingredients all around. My biggest bone to pick with the food itself was the poke. Now, I try not to be biased because I was born & raised in Hawai'i and there's no where in the world that can compare when it comes to poke. But what we had at Ohana Poke lacked good flavor. I'm not sure what's supposed to be in the Hawaiian Poke but it tasted like plain ahi cubes to me, there was nothing special about it. The Spicy Tuna Poke really threw me for a loop. Traditionally, spicy tuna poke is made with a spicy mayo. What we had here was just straight up spicy - and I love spicy food! My fiancé could barely finish his food because of the heat. Like I said, I love spicy. But the flavor I was looking for just wasn't there. I ended up asking for a side of spicy mayo to drench my poke in - that's where all the flavor I had came from.
The overall vibe of the restaurant was cute and welcoming. It's definitely somewhere I would have lunch with a friend, if all else was ideal. The service was a little different. The young lady who helped us did not seem like she wanted to be there and she sure as heck didn't want to be serving us. I hate walking into a restaurant and feeling like I'm inconveniencing the staff by ordering. We did stroll in about 30-40 minutes to closing but I don't think that's an excuse.
Would I recommend Ohana Poke to a friend? Maybe with caution. It's not in my list of "must-haves" on our next trip...
Read moreThis isn't bad if you don't have any experience with traditional poke bars in Hawaii. The flavor is not terrible. Nevertheless I was SERIOUSLY disappointed. 1. The girl who helped us was sassy and impatient. She also felt it was acceptable to vent to her friend about me and my confusion with ordering within earshot. Super classy. 2. There were no pictures to give an idea of presentation, fish/rice ratio, what exactly you are ordering, neither do they have a display case like similar concept Chinese restaurants to help aid in decision making 3. The rice is long grain rice. I have never had poke or sashimi dishes served with long grain rice. It should be calrose or sushi rice which are short grain. 3. For the amount I paid I could've gotten four times the amount of fish at the fish distributer and made it myself. For that matter, the flavor and amount of meat in the poke kits at the distributer are way better than this for a similar cost. 4. The seaweed salad is not a typical seaweed salad and while it was okay flavor wise, it was not at all what I was expecting. 5. This is not at all like a Hawaiian poke bar where you can purchase various poke salads by the quarter pound or have a poke bowl with fresh rice that isnt 3/4 rice. I suppose comparing a restaurant in Billings, MT to a Poke bar in Hawaii is a little unfair but if you are going to call yourselves Ohana Poke you should probably consider in your business model what traditional poke actually is. All in all the negatives far outweigh the positives and I...
Read moreOk so I absolutely love going here the food is amazing. However this might seem a little extreme but… I always order avocado and as you know it is 1.00 extra or even 1.25 extra almost anywhere. Well when I looked at my bowl when I arrived home. I was very disappointed to see 3 small slices of avocado on my big poke bowl. I thought it could have been a mix up or something but i had one of my good friends pick me up one while she was on her lunch about a week later. Yet again I see these tiny 3 thin slices of avocado. I absolutely love avocado it ties together the whole meal. But if I am paying a whole dollar extra for it, you better put at least HALF of it or the whole thing in my bowl. It just seemed very ridiculous and a waste of money one dollar for 3 small slices. I try to be as frugal with money as I can! But i would like the amount I pay for! I will give one extra star because customer service has gotten better, like a couple months ago if you would walk in there you would always be greeted by 2 sassy young girls that acted like you were a huge inconvenience to them as soon as you walked through the door but, now I am greeted...
