Newk's Eatery — Restaurant in Birmingham

I was very excited, couldn't wait to do this review on the new breakfast menu. My husband and I are from Montgomery. We just found out, seeing the sign, that they are now serving breakfast. I was a little skeptical, but I did trust Newks reputation and I was so right! First of all I want to compliment the customer service. The workers made recommendations and seem to care. They were also very polite. I saw the menu for breakfast but I wasn't sure what to expect. When I got the plate of blueberry lemon zest cream cheese French toast, my expectations were exceeded. They were delicious!! My husband got a scrambled egg bowl with rosemary potatoes cooked in olive oil. They were also delicious! They didn't have any more grits ready, so I got a fruit bowl instead. Everything was very Gourmet. I asked the manager how long they have been doing breakfast? He said that this has only been going on for 6 months so far and that they were the only location as a pilot. I was a little disappointed by that because I thought that I found my new breakfast spot back home in Montgomery. Well, we do look forward to seeing this do well and spread. Best French toast recipe ever! Will be up here a while and back again to try the banana...

Last night me and my husband who is a restaurant manager went into Newks late almost closing time (without realizing the time). We were greeted by a floor person who gave us a warm welcome and even complimented our cute baby and told us congratulations which was so nice. A manager took our food order with ease and a smile and we were just floored by how nice everyone was. We have the worst experiences with restaurants at certain times but they surely did not disappoint last night. We both ordered the Italian sub and I got a salad and my husband got a soup and it was so on point and still fresh and delicious even at closing hours. We enjoyed our meal and asked for a Togo box so we didn't hold them up too long as we both know it's rude to sit in a place after hours. The manager never rushed us or batted an eye at all. We were talking about how great the service was basically our whole time there. It's very nice to feel welcomed and wanted in a restaurant now days as most people seem to not even want you there half the time. This location is next to multiple hospitals and previously gave free drinks to healthcare workers. Classy. Then my healthcare worker wife asked about it today. Now only MD’s get free drinks. Ok. Ok. Let’s break this down. Who should we give free drinks to? It should be someone who makes more money than their colleagues, the ones for whom a few dollar drink is no problem. We should give free drinks to someone who already gets free food and drink in their hospital that bends over backward to brown-nose them. And most importantly, in the age of COVID, let’s award free drinks to the only personnel who have the status to refuse personal contact with COVID patients. Let’s definitely not give free drinks to the underpaid people who would get fired if they refused to enter a hospital room due to COVID risks. Let’s especially not give free drinks to the environmental staff who endure the most poignant contact with COVID to ensure clean facilities, for pennies. Let’s go ahead and put a sign up that says we honor wealth and status, not unsung sacrifice. Not classy. Bottoms up...
