I was at Rickwood Field and the groundskeeper mentioned I should check out the Negro Southern League Museum. A great recommendation. About 2 miles from Rickwood, near downtown, the museum is part of the Birmingham Barons complex. It is a great find with rich history. Similar to the Negro League Museum in Kansas City, it offers a nice representation of the great legacy of those Negro League teams who were part of the Southern League. Donations accepted. Street metered parking is available.

I was in a rush and had to dart in and out but could have easily spent several hours enjoying...

Such an amazing experience! I didn’t have any knowledge of breaking the color barrier in baseball beside Jackie Robinson. The guys in the front of the museum are so knowledgeable! We took only one photo because we were so engrossed in the museum and taking it all in! We learned some of our own local history from Arkansas/Memphis area teams that we didn’t know had existed. The wall of baseballs is a must see because it’s the closest thing to a memorial we have to honor the players of the Negro Leagues. Awesome museum which, obviously, highlights negros' accomplishments throughout the history of baseball.

Lots of neat bats, gloves/mitts, uniforms, and stories. I'd say a 1-hour stay would suffice.

The staff is helpful & friendly if you decide to ask for assistance.

Admission is free, but they do gladly accept donations. Also, there's a little stand where you purchase a few souvenirs, if you'd like.

If you're into baseball - I'd honestly say this...
