We got into bishop a little late, but we figured it would be easy to find good food in the area around 9pm, right? Nope. Every place we checked, even places that had bars and called themselves a roadhouse were in fact closing when we got in. We went to Yamatani largely because it was the only place we could find open and boy, were we in for a surprise. I ordered the shrimp tempura with a spicy tuna roll and my wife ordered the sukiyaki. The miso came out first, and I have to say, at least because we'd been eating a lot of road food, that miso was so unctuous and delicious and simple like it should be. It probably wouldn't have been as good if we weren't half starved for decent food by that point but it just was that perfect thing we didn't know we needed. Then our main dishes came out. My wifes suki yaki was presented very lovingly for what is essentially a chicken and vegetable hot pot. She kept raving about how good every little bit of that was and how well it was cooked and I had to say the same for my tempura. It was actually crispy and sweet and delicious and I couldn't think of a single complaint other than the rice was a little plain, which seems silly to complain about(a little toasted sesame or some pickles on top really would have hit the spot however.) Then, we received our spicy tuna which was exactly like you want it to be, a bit meaty, a bit spicy, and a little bit fruity and toasty. A perfect spicy tuna roll and none of that excessive mayo that you see around a lot. All in all, we were blown away by what we expected to be a so so meal elevated to a really great level by a great staff using great...
Read moreI have to express my disappointment with this experience. The tempura sweet potato was severely undercooked, and the sushi barely met average standards. As for the teriyaki steak.. I never had something worse than this before.
Despite several open tables, we were made to wait a couple of minutes before being seated. Our party consisted of two adults and a toddler, and we were given a small corner table, positioned uncomfortably close (perhaps just an inch) to the area where dirty plates were piled up. A screen separated our chairs from this unsightly scene, but it was so close and unclean that it left a rather unpleasant feeling while dining.
During our meal, my son was making some noise. I took him out of the restaurant immediately after like 1 minute. But while this happened, there was a waiter behind the screen who responded in a rather rude and sarcastic manner, saying, "Really? Really? Take him away!"
Finally, when I approached the counter to settle the bill, what appeared to be the manager remarked, "Your son is quite vocal, isn't he?"
In my overall experience in the United States, I've always found people to be friendly and courteous. This was the first time I encountered such rudeness...
Read moreIt sucks that I'm giving this place a 1 star when I was so excited to finally try this restaurant. I come into for work often and have struggled to find food that fits my palate. I live off of Japanese food and was hoping this would be a new spot for my firm to have our group dinners since we all love Japanese food. I told them about this place and that I couldn't try it out last trip so I was going to go this time and report back. My report back will be they're rude and we should never use their services. I waited patiently in line with everyone else to be attended to. I was skipped over and not even acknowledged. I brushed it off the 1st and even the 2nd time when she sat 2 ppl without reservations who were behind me at the last spots at the sushi bar, which was where I planned to sit since I was solo. It was until I said hey what about me that I was even acknowledged. I thought about continuing to wait but was annoyed since I'd only be able to get takeout since she skipped me and gave away the last seats. It really sucks đ and kinda...
