The two stars are for what AKA used to be: Humble. I loved this place before the remodeling. It was comfortable and quaint. Did you guys remodel your staff too? Because the last two times I've ordered takeout, the girl on the phone was, to be frank, completely illiterate. The first time she got my order wrong was an avocado roll instead of the cucumber roll I always order. I wrote it off as a simple misunderstanding and could deal with it, but this last time has really pushed my buttons. I am a vegan and have been a regular at AKA since I moved to Jackson in 2012. Most of the original staff knows me and my order by heart. Every time I order, it is the same thing. Cucumber roll, extra cucumber, sriracha over the the top, and lots of sesame seeds. I stress every time I order, even though, like I said, that most of the staff knows me, that I am a vegan so there is not any confusion. Instead of a cucumber roll, I got an eel and cucumber roll. That's right. RAW. EEL. The sriracha and sesame seeds were covering the contents, so I didn't notice it was eel until I blew chunks all over my living room and went to check the receipt afterward. When I called to make a complaint, the same girl who took my order answered. I sternly reminded her of what I had ordered and informed her of what I recieved. This girl had the audacity to argue with me that I had ordered eel! You tell me how a person can hear eel when cucumber and vegan are both said. Impossible, which leads me to believe she was just screwing with me. In the end I spoke to a manager and have a free meal coming, but honestly... Free meals three times daily for the rest of my life couldn't make me set foot in there again. This last screw-up has seriously put a bad taste in my mouth....
Read more10 out of 10 recommend. This might have been the best sushi I've ever had. To be fair though, I'm new to the sushi scene. I'm by no means a sushi expert, so I don't have many places to compare it to lol. My friend who eats sushi all of the time recommended this place to me and I know why. I walked in to place my to go order. I knew I wanted to try my friend's favorite roll, which is the Crunch Vegas, but I wanted another roll, I just didn't know what one. I'm so glad I walked in! The employees up front were seriously so good to me. It was a guy and 2 girls. I told them I was newer to sushi and wondered if they had any suggestions of could help me. They didn't get annoyed with me, they didn't roll their eyes or deep sigh, they didn't even act like they were too busy, (which they could've easily done since it was an hour til closing). They smiled and they asked me what I like and don't like and narrowed it down for me! Their customer service alone had me convinced this place is worth coming to.
Crunch Vegas: so so good! I can see why it's my friend's favorite. Maki 7: my new favorite sushi roll. Ever. I literally want to go get some right now just thinking about it lol.
Final takeaway: whether you eat sushi religiously or are brand new to it, this is the place to go. The 2 rolls and a soft drink came out to about $25. The only thing I'll do differently next time I go is I won't get root beer lol. Not a fan of their root beer for whatever reason. Definitely wish they had Pepsi products, but I can just get a Jack & coke...
Read moreWe've been eating here for a couple years and despite their notoriously slow service, have always returned because the food was so good and the waitresses were so pleasant. Sadly, since they've expanded their building and hired more wait staff, the service has gotten so much worse and we've been back at least 15 times (slow learners...we thought it was just them getting used to the expanded size). The line is at least as long (or longer) during their peak times despite the fact that over 1/3 of their seats are sitting empty. Once seated, it takes at least 20 minutes just to order some water and another 10-15 minutes to get the water and, if we're very lucky, she'll take our order at the same time. Unfortunately, she usually says 'be right back' and it's another 10 minutes. Food takes at least half an hour to get to the table and when it does, the order is usually wrong or lacking in some manner. When it's wrong, it has been because the waitress wrote it down wrong. They need to go back to the menus where the customer checks off what they want. The tempura and tempura sushi rolls have always been cold and somewhat soggy as if they've been sitting. I went for the last time yesterday. Despite 2 waitresses and a 'manager/host' and only 6 other customers in the entire place, it took 20 minutes just to order drinks and another 15 for them to show up. Our orders took 35 minutes and were cold and soggy (tempura california roll). From now on I'll make the drive to Lansing to our old...
