The service was great, very friendly people who get to you quickly. Was even being served and had another employee check to see if I had been served yet.
The atmosphere was good, nothing outstanding here. It has the feel of your typical family owned business, honestly like seeing this over an overly fancy place. It really had a New York pizza place feel in my opinion.
Since this was my first time, I wanted to try a few things. I got the Gyro and fries, a slice of sausage and a slice of beef. The gyro was ok in my mind, yes I'm Greek and have a high standard. The meat taste better than the majority of places in KC, and it comes from the spinner. I have only had one better supplier of this lamb and beef American Gyro, and it's not in KC. The sauce was pretty decent, I like it with a little more garlic. The pita bread is where I really think it knocked the gyro down. The bread was warmed on the flat grill dry. It really needs a brush of butter on both sides to pop the flavors. It's how Greeks, and most Gyro places serve their pita bread.
The pizza certainly had that authentic New York style and taste. I've had pizza from New York and while it's been good, it was never my first choice for pizza style. In saying that, they still make a pretty dang good pizza here at Vito's. I liked the flavor of both, and since I couldn't eat it all I saved parts of both to try cold. The flavor holds up well cold also.
Overall a pretty solid pizza place, you should give it a try. I'm sure if they impressed someone that's not a fan of that style pizza, others...
Read moreIt wasn't too bad. Ordered a super cheesy calzone, was told it would be 8-10 minutes. No biggie. 10 minutes pass, I keep in mind that it's supposed to be extra cheesy so may need a few more minutes. So 20 minutes in I walk up, asked if it was ready or needed a few minutes, was told it just came out and was asked if I just wanted it in to go box, as my mother in law had finished eating what she could, I said that's fine. Different guy asked if it was for me, I said yes and was asked again about a box, I said might as well, the guy snaps it takes 10 minutes to cook a calzone. I said it had been 20, dude tells me there's no way. I told him "I ordered at 6:10. it's now 6:30." he ended up saying sorry about that but his attitude was off putting. And then I found ham in it, definitely not what I ordered. Food was ok, But being from Florida, not really impressed. I'll try...
Read moreThis place is unbelievable. Like, you drive over a steep hump and into this gully-now-parking-lot off the main road, whateveritscalled, and Bam! That pizza place you've only ever seen in malls you can't recall sits there surrounded by empty spots somehow. Disguised like an LA donut shop or an original east coast pizza place without the strafing skyscrapers, yet this space seems like it should never be empty -- and probably rarely is actually because they provide pizza at the ready and so quickly made that the drive home takes veritably longer. If you can even stand to not eat your pie immediately, on the spot, at the counter.
More fairly priced than Minsky's and more authentic than Papa John's. A sheer gem even if (and also because) somewhat hidden, unknown, and out-of-the-way. By far my personal favorite pizza place in the...
