I am a fan of Alabama so Roll Tide! Roll Peddler! The Boone N.C. Peddler Steakhouse is second only to Tide Football for consistently being Championship caliber restaurant. I thought I would get the same in Hickory you can read my post on Hickory I was wrong. My most recent visit was this past Friday to Boone Peddler. I want to assure everyone reading this post that I am only comparing apples to apples. The Peddler Filet vs. Filet from any other restaurant. I don't eat any other type of cut of meat so I cant speak about other cuts of steak. I have eaten steak from these restaurants steakhouses I am going to list: Longhorns, Bennigan's , Columbia, outback, Texas Roadhouse, Ponderosa, Sizzler, Lone Star, Logan's, Sagebrush. There are a few that I cant remember. Full disclosure it has been long time since I ate steak from all but one of the listed. Longhorns steak house. Once I discovered Longhorns for 20 years I only ate steak from Longhorns. I moved to Boone Area two years ago. Because the nearest Longhorns was in Hickory I tried to Boone Peddler Steakhouse. What an incredibly lucky payoff that I got to experience the Filet steak at Boone Peddler Steakhouse. After 20 years of Longhorns it was like the Boy in the Bubble was given a chance to experience life outside the bubble. I have a special needs son that has limited diet and only eats certain foods. He will only eat the steak and nothing else so salad, no side vegetables. For the past several years once my son had growth spurt and shot up to 6'3" and 300 plus pounds. Until I took him to Peddler we had to buy 2 steaks because Longhorns only offers 6,8, or 10 ounce filet. My son can eat the entire 20 ounce steak as the one in the picture I posted. Unlike Longhorns the Peddler Steakhouse allows us to order a 20 ounce steak and not have to order two steaks. My son who is more picky about his food always cleans his plate at Peddler but there is always some leftover fatty parts at Longhorns. So, it is my personal opinion that after eating steaks from many places The Boone Peddler Steakhouse is National Champions in steak and consistently produces the #1 steak Filet in the country. The Filet steak at the Boone Peddler is superior in taste appearance, and consistency. Ok now that I have discussed the steak lets talk about staff. At Longhorns you get seated by host and assigned a wait person. You know what I mean when I say at every other restaurant when you need something you have to ask a passing by staff " can you please get me some butter or anything" the answer you get is I will tell your waiter or waitress. Customer service is a lost and forgotten art everywhere but the Boone Peddler. Every single staff member from the front of the House to the back of the house prepares everything for the front staff deserves 5 Star reward for service. I want to applaud the staff that I interacted with on Friday January 5, 2018. Jessica was our primary waitress Megan the Manager, Bower (who has taken care of us in the past) Mckayla, Henry (the grill master) and all the staff working the dining room. Unlike every other steak house when you go to Boone Peddler you never have time to ask for anything because every single person is a team player that looks at every table as they pass by and get you anything you might need. My son said they are serial fillers meaning that your glass is never empty they fill it before it ever gets empty. You can only give 5 stars on google review but in my mind Boone Peddler gets double stars for their customer service, consistency, quality, and commitment to excellence. If I ever move from the Boone area I can assure you my vacation and every chance I could to make a trip to Boone the priority would be to visit Boone Peddler. I know this was a long novel but I hope it helps you understand the superior experience you will have at Boone Peddler over any other steakhouse.

Update to manager response. I stand by my review. The food was below average. The French Onion soup - if you want to serve it, get it right. The slightly brown water that I was served is not even close to French Onion Soup. Again, as I stated - I understand the Salad Bar is closed - it is every where, but that was nothing more than bagged salad. Finally, I did mentioned the issues with the wait person. There was no response. I will say I did need to leave as I certainly did not expect the service to take as long as it did, so I did not insist to speak to a manager, but with your attitude, I certainly will not make that mistake in the future. I will post the rest of the pictures. This Peddler should be closed. 1) Ordered the French Onion soup. Picture on web and in menu description said it house bread on top with melted cheese. Look at the picture I posted. It looked and tasted like dirty dishwater. I mentioned this to the wait person, who shrugged and asked if I wanted some cheddar cheese to sprinkle on top. 2) The salad bar is closed due to Covid, so Peddler makes a big deal out of the small saucer sized salad to order. It taste and looks like something that was shaken out of a Food Lion Bag of Salad. 3) There was one of the longest and thickest hairs in my salad I have ever seen. Again, I mentioned this to my wait person who again shrugged, and asked what I would like to do about it. I ask you, with this lousy service, and complete disregard for sanitation, and accurate description, why would you pay to go to this place? It should be closed like the other lousy restaurants in the area.

Arrived in Boone 8/29 and decided for a good dinner. Very bad choice amidst all of the colorful reviews. Service was good, no complaints in that aspect. Server was kind and brought our drinks, the “peddler” strolled up on a drink cart with three pieces of meat that didn’t look….”5 Star” fine steakhouse dining. The salad concept is nice for customizing…..in the end a bit much to fill in a piece of paper for one’s salad. The bread was hard and cold. Ended up going for an unorthodox approach and invested in the fried shrimp and crab cakes. This is where the hammer hits the nail in the coffin for this venue. The fried shrimp were overly cooked, with old oil. The texture of the shrimp was vulcanized into a new polymer…sorry, but these were not “fresh” at all, seems like someone was sent to the Food Lion to grab a box of Gorton’s boxed fried shrimp and threw them box and all in the microwave. The crab cakes were like burnt hockey pucks…..the asparagus was beyond overly cooked into a mush, no clue how the molecular structure of asparagus maintained that long. Wished and hoped for for a better experience by the spectacular ambience and decor. Unfortunately we will spend our money elsewhere. We ate what we could stomach, paid and made our exit and went to the Chik-fil-a next door. There went $97 down the drain. Not recommended.

The Peddler has been my absolute favorite restaurant for well over 10 years. I do not live in the area but have been willing to drive an hour to enjoy a delicious salad bar, a perfectly cooked steak, and service second to none. Today was the worst experience that I have had to date. So bad that we agree that we will not go back. The new renovations are nice, but seating now is extremely close. Tonight, I was seated less than two feet from another person. This person, obviously sick, coughed throughout the duration that we were there. It was extremely uncomfortable. I found myself holding my breath as not to breathe in each time this lady coughed. It was so tight, in fact, "the peddler" could not get his cart to our table for us to select and to cut the meat. He apologized and held the cut of meat up so that we could see it - since the cart could not be seen from our table. To make things worse, our service tonight was worse than any three star restaurant that we have been to. We were seated for 13 minutes before being acknowledged by our waiter. Our drinks arrived a few minutes after we were acknowledged (which was good) except the bread was cold and dry. An additional 14 minutes passed (lady coughing constantly) before our salads arrived. I actually turned the chair around from the table located to my left and moved to the opposite side of the table (basically sitting at the table to my left which was not occupied) to distance myself from the sick lady. 20 minutes AFTER we FINISHED our salads, our steaks still had not been delivered. I approached the Manager. I noted my dissatisfaction with the proximity of tables, the slow service, and no entree after being there 55 minutes. He disappeared into the kitchen to determine why we had not received our steaks. After a few minutes, he approached our table. His response to us was - "I know what happened. Your ticket got placed in the completed pile rather than the prepare pile. I have them working on it and it will be out in a few minutes". I, again, (now that he was standing at our table) noted the proximity of the tables and the lady coughing. His response was "I can't do anything about that". My husband said "we're done. What do we owe for the salads and drinks?" The Manager said "no charge". My husband and I left disappointed, hungry, and now angry. I realize that anyone can have a bad night. The reason that my husband I and agree that we will not go back is the attitude of the Manager.

Our note to the Manager: The renovations are nice. The standards and quality of service that we have been accustomed to at The Peddler have plummeted. The proximity of tables is absolutely within your control and should be addressed immediately. I sat closer to a very sick lady tonight than I sit in proximity to my husband in a car. I realize Covid restrictions are over but never have I ever sat so close to a stranger to have a meal. The poor service and mishap with our steaks not being prepared is baffling. What did The Peddler do with our cuts of meat? Why did a waiter not note that we had not been served? The absolute worst part of all of this .....was your attitude to address these very legitimate concerns. A humbled response would have gone a LONG way with us. I am SAD. The Peddler has been my all time...
