Does eating at the same establishment three times in a day and ordering food to go for the next day imply that the food served there is some of the best plant-based food you've had in your 9 years a vegan? Lulu Green is an oasis in the vegan food desert that is Boston. (I'm sure restaurants have plant0based food options, but surprisingly there truly aren''t that many vegan restaurants in the city.)
Before I list all the incredible food I ordered, you should know that when you first walk into the restaurant, you wonder how could a place have such consistently high reviews. The decor is adorable, the staff inviting and friendly, and the place is immaculate. It just looks like a regular cafe that you would order a salad or panini and smoothie and continue on with your day. What you don't realize when you walk through the door is that you're about to have some of the most flavorful food you will ever experience in your lifetime because the owners are there making sure everything is just perfect. Everything is fresh and healthy and robust with depths of flavor, but not oily or fried. And the best part is that if you decide to visit in the evenings, there's a vibe with dimmed lighting, candles, and creative and delicious cocktails... suitable to bring a date.
On to the food... the unforgettable food! Here's what I ordered
Shawarma bowl: The seitan are so crispy on the outside and chewy/moist in the middle (I don't know how they do it without frying it but they have cracked the code) and the sauces that accompany it are palette pleasing. I knew when I dipped my pita into the pool of olive oil sitting in the tahini, that this place was the real deal. Foodies know how to spot a quality olive oil versus the cheap stuff, and Lulu doesn't skimp on quality.
Muhumara - when I see this offered on a menu, I usually get it because it's the lesser know friend to hummus and babbaganoush. Usually if it's available on a menu in the US, someone in the kitchen knows how to make it well, just like the LuLu Green team doesn't. The pomegranate molasses add a nice kick.
The Maple Hot Sauce Glaxed Boneless Wings were my 3 pm snack. I love vegan wings and what I thought stood out about these is the wings' ability to stay crispy without being fried. They remained crispy even though I took my time savoring them. The wings are dense in a good way. They have a hearty texture that is smooth and satisfying. I could have ordered a liter of the sauce because it was so unique and pleasing.
They just began a new dinner menu when I returned for the 3rd time that day. I felt so fortunate to be able to experience it.
The Charred Broccoli - If my mother had served broccoli to me in this manner as a child, it wouldn't have taken me 35 years to realize I love it! The preserved lemon dressing and za’atar gremolata make this a standout specialty.
The Mushroom Short Rib IS A MUST! i get that the average person won't visit LG 3 times in a single day, but if you are popping in and could only order one menu item, this is it. You will never believe it is made from mushrooms. Texture alone was a 10/10 but taste made it something to savor slowly.
I ordered two delicious cocktails to accompany my dinner: the Social Anxiety AKA Espresso Martini and the High School DropOut. I would have loved to have ordered more, but I needed to be able to see straight on my walk back to the hotel.
Because I was leaving Boston the next day, I ordered the Beet Tartare, Popcorn-crusted carrots, and Shawarma. These dishes all tasted wonderful. The green herb sauce on the shawarma was particularly tasty!
I wish the Lulu Green team all the success and hope that one day we will see more Lulu Green restaurants (no pressure), but only if they can maintain the excellent level of quality that this team has established. What a gift you are giving to the world by sharing your...
Read moreOverall terrible experience at lulu green. Approached the store with my friend and my service dog. When we entered, we were told that they didn’t allow dogs in the establishment. I then explained that he is my service dog and the employee rudely rolled her eyes and mumbled something.. they then proceeded to let us order food and sit and wait for it for about 10 minutes until we were then approached by the manager stating that they can’t have dogs in the establishment. I then explained to her that he is my service dog and she proceeded to tell me that and emotional support dog doesn’t count as a service dog. Never in my life has a store, restaurant or any establishment told me that emotional support doesn’t count as a service dog. She blamed it on board of health telling them they can’t allow dogs. I work at a restaurant down the street from here and we allow dogs in all day long, along with many other establishments in the area. I then had to wait outside, while my friend boxed up our food Togo. The manager was trying to apologize and the employee was very rude about the whole encounter. I was very annoyed that they let us order the food and then let us sit inside for 10 minutes WITH the dog before the manager approached to basically kick me out. I would have left initially without ordering food from this dumb place. Also the food I would probably give 2 stars. Service and employees: 1 star. Will never go back. And neither will any...
Read moreI would not recommend this establishment. While the service was friendly and attentive, the overall dining experience fell significantly short of expectations, especially given the high prices. The food lacked flavor and depth, and the portion sizes were disappointingly small. The menu was quite limited, and unfortunately, the restaurant was unable to accommodate even basic requests such as a ginger ale.
Additionally, the space is quite small and not suited for larger groups, which can make for a cramped dining experience. We ordered a variety of items including the Meze starters, burgers, chicken sandwiches, and finished with desserts like the mousse and macarons — regrettably, none of the dishes met the mark, and the flavors were underwhelming across the board.
I don’t typically leave negative reviews, but I believe this place needs to reevaluate both its culinary execution and overall value. The current buzz driven by social media may sustain initial interest, but unless meaningful changes are made, the excitement will fade, and the kitchen will need to rise to meet genuine dining...
