If you’re looking for one of the largest and tastiest sandwiches in the North End, you have to give Monica’s Mercato a try! You will not leave hungry, or disappointed!
I have been down to the North End countless times. However, tonight the weather was poor and I didn’t feel like making the trip from South Boston.
Luckily, Uber Eats had Monica’s available to order from. Monica’s Mercato offers a wide variety of delicious Italian classics. You’ll find a wide variety of hot and cold subs, fresh salads, homemade soup, hand-sliced cheeses, hand-sliced meats, house-baked bread, and so much more.
The main draw here is the enormous hot and cold subs. The meats and cheeses are hand-sliced and the meat is piled high on house-baked bread. The bread is just right too. It isn’t too hard and it isn’t too soft. I dislike breads that rip up the roof of your mouth. That isn’t an issue here!
I went with the classic, cold Italian sub. Fresh-baked bread piled high with hand-sliced prosciutto, mortadella, salami, and provolone. It is topped with crisp lettuce, pickles, juicy tomato, onion, hots, olive oil, and balsamic.
The sandwich was around $20. However, it is large enough to split amongst two adults. The sub is massive! It is well worth $20 in my opinion. The meats and cheeses are all hand-sliced and the ingredients are all top-notch. The size of the sandwich is well worth the money.
Monica’s Mercato is one of my go-to spots in the North End for an incredible Italian sub. I look forward to trying the Caprese Burrata Special sub on my next visit!
My only suggestion would be is to offer the option to add mayo to a sub on UberEats. I know many people frown on this, but just a suggestion. The sub was delicious with the olive oil and balsamic!
One of my go-to spots when I am craving a true, authentic North...

Been on a mission to find the best Italian subs in Boston. After trying my current favorite from Table Mercato last week, a colleague from the North End insisted I check out this spot. The layout of the store got me confused at first. One side was a salumeria where you order sandwiches or pick up cured meats by the chunk, while the other side was a small mercato with imported Italian goods.
We ordered an Italian sub and an Italian steak sub, their two most popular items. Once you place your order, they slice the cheese and cured meats fresh from the slicer, so it takes a little longer (about ten minutes with two tickets ahead of us). The wait was worth it, though. The meat was softer, more aromatic, and definitely better than pre-sliced. The steak, however, was pre-cooked and reheated in the oven with cheese, which made it a bit dry. Their house hot pepper relish added some punch and moisture, but couldn’t quite save it. They do offer fresh pesto on any sandwich for a dollar, so I might add that next time.
On the other hand, the Italian sub was fabulous. Perhaps the best I’ve had in the city. I’m usually lukewarm on a classic Italian, which lean too salty without much umami, but here they add freshly sliced prosciutto to the usual mortadella-and-salami mix. That extra layer of flavor made all the difference.
Still, using a good focaccia and olive oil as a base changes the whole game, so Table Mercato’s is my preference. The soft ciabatta here isn’t bad, but it gets soggy a little too quickly. I’ll definitely be back, though, to try their chicken cutlet sub for a more...
Read moreIt's a small shop where you have to pass through the turnstile to go into the shop. That's something I've never seen before. The menu is near the turnstile and it's hard to see once you've gone through the turnstile. The atmosphere was a little uninviting because the workers seemed like they wanted you to get out of the store. We ordered the special of the week which is Italian sausage with peppers and onions. We waited for around 5 minutes for the sandwich to be toasted which felt unusually long but it went by fast since you can look around the store at all of the Italian goods. We paid for our sandwich just around the corner from where we ordered. Near the cashier, they have fresh pasta which looks really good.
The sandwich was warm and it was cold outside so I was excited to eat it. When we opened it, we saw cheese all over the sausage slices...the menu didn't have cheese on it. If it's mozzarella, I'd be fine with it because it's the cheese I like, however, it was provolone. It's a pungent cheese and I'm not a fan of the smell but my boyfriend wasn't a fan of the smell nor the taste. Putting that aside, the sandwich was okay, but I feel like Costco's Italian sausage sandwich is better and Costco gives more peppers and onions.
Overall, I feel like the menu could have been more clear and the sandwich was too expensive for...
