I am not usually one to post reviews, either positive or negative. However, my experience yesterday was so horrible, I felt I had to speak up, to warn others not to come here! I am so disgusted and upset by what I experienced here. This has been a favorite café of mine, ever since they opened. I love the coffee and food, and it is clean, comfortable, all in all a great place to stop for coffee or a quick bite. However, when I came in yesterday there was a huge projection screen taking up most of the wall. And on it... terrifying images of the meat-packing industry. Thousands of chickens being bull-dozered to their deaths; cows being eviscerated on an assembly line; pigs in tiny cages with their young struggling to nurse. It just went on and on. Such extreme carnage. This was an unbelievable glorification of death and destruction, and utter disrespect for the living breathing animals that so many people in our society choose to consume. It was absolutely disgusting. I found myself running for the bathroom to vomit up everything I had been eating. How can this possibly be acceptable viewing for a restaurant?? Especially one that serves the very animal corpses that were being displayed? I will never, EVER come back to this horrible...
Read moreHah! The only thing "Modern" about this cafe is the rudeness of the staff.
The food is excellent, kudos to the chef, but the counter staff go out of their way to be non-helpful. I ordered the avocado on bread, this is called a "tartine" in hipster speak, with an egg on the side. The egg is poached and came out where the whites were uber runny. I asked the counter staff whether they would ask the chef to cook the egg more; hah, you would have thought I asked the soup nazi to re-heat the mullagatawny. The lady at the counter stated, "we only cook these one way". Well, thankfully I asked the lady working on the floor for help. She had the chef cook an egg that was not undercooked. The chef then returned a beautiful egg.
I have worked in the food industry in Boulder for years. One of the toughest thing for managers is to get good help in a town full of entitled white kids. I have found however with a little vetting and training a restaurant can find wonderful, hard working kids who are a joy to be around. I suggest the Modern Cafe explore...
Read moreThis might be my new favorite coffee place, says the Starbucks addict. Plus, it's just so PRETTY.
Came here based on a great review that I read and I was not disappointed. It was mid afternoon and I was a little worried about parking. I ended up parking on the street about a half block up so it was wasted worry. I ordered the Nutella tartine (I feel hip just by calling toast "tartine") It's thicker bread, slathered in Nutella and topped with a little bit of sea salt. Delish! And messy, I might add. Also had a latte....no art....but still good. Served in a huge mug with no handles which allows you to warm your hands.
Service was friendly but not overly, which I'm always happy about. Super hip crowd....all singles, all on their computer. Did I mention the free wifi? And you get the option of fast, faster, and fastest. :) But seriously, why wouldn't you always choose "fastest"?
I kind of hesitate to write a review because I want to keep this place...
