No bagels or pretzels at G Café Bakery — but you can have the best of both worlds with a pregel, a hybrid of the two. I stopped by yesterday and had one filled with eggs and cheese. Honestly, it tasted just like an artisan everything bagel.
Pregels aren’t unique to G Café, but they’re definitely rare. While looking into their origin, I discovered that a chain of entertainment venues in London called All Star Lanes serves them too. They aim to offer a retro American experience in the heart of London — quite the opposite of G Café, which seems to give Americans a taste of a European-style bakery.
In addition to pregels, G Café also offers cronuts — a croissant-doughnut hybrid that was trademarked by a French chef in New York City back in 2013. I tried one a few years ago from the now-closed Oxford Baking Company in Oxford, CT. Honestly, it didn’t live up to a good doughnut or a proper croissant. G Café doesn’t carry regular doughnuts either.
The bakery has four locations in New Haven, plus one in Branford and another in Southport. It’s a bit pricey — we paid $41 for two small coffees, two egg sandwiches, and two almond croissants . Also, it gets busy! At 8:30 on a Saturday morning, I had to wait in...
Read moreThis is a cute cafe that could be great with a few tweaks. When you first walk in you're greeted by a display case of pastries, a wall of artisan breads, and a coffee station. If you didn't ask anyone, that's all you would assume they sell because there's no menu posted anywhere. All they have is a little handout at the ordering counter with a few sandwiches on it. It doesn't list any breakfast sandwiches either, which you most certainly can get. They also only have "pragels" which are not explained anywhere, but are a cross between pretzels and bagels. They're delicious, but I think people would appreciate a label somewhere explaining that. I got a breakfast sandwich on a pragel and it was great. I also got a pain au chocolat but it was quite stale and tasted off like it had proofed too long (i.e. it tasted somewhat boozy). All in all a very...
Read moreI have ordered from here numerous times. The service has never been good however yesterday did it for me. I ordered pick up and stood at register while the servers each waited on other people that came in after me and ignored me standing there. When I asked if someone could help me I was asked to wait. When I asked if I should stand here or get in the order line for pick up the server told me either way that I just needed to give them a minute. ??? I ordered 2 open face brie sandwiches. I have ordered them in the past. This time the slice of bread was thinner than before with barely and arugula and quite frankly not worth $10. I order for our company. Not going back.
