Only get the Fried Chicken!
The Good: restaurant is clean, staff was super friendly, grease was not old so none of the food had an old grease taste. The fried chicken was fried well, nice crispy skin.
The meh / bad: nothing was seasoned well or hardly at all. So, even though the fried chicken was cooked well, we had to salt and pepper it fiercely so that it tasted good. The chicken livers need that seasoning in the batter, but it was lacking. Gizzards have not been soaked in buttermilk to make them more tender, so just tough and chewy / crunchy. Again, at least no bad grease taste. Also, the Mac n cheese tastes like it came out of a banquet tv dinner. The cinnamon rolls had like two lines of icing drizzle on them, and yet I see some reviews below where the cinnamon rolls are covered with icing. Guess I was unlucky.
The worst: country fried steak dinner - just say no! They actually sell a processed country fried steak, the frozen oval ones like you used to get in the school cafeteria, or like Swanson's. Then they bury it in flour gravy. The gravy was so thick and heavy, you couldn't see the CFS under the glob of gravy. Oh, then there's some instant mashed potatoes, easy to tell they are just rehydrated potato flakes. Both were some of the worst items I've had from a restaurant like this in a long time.
So, my review is a bit harsh, but it's only because of the way this establishment has chosen to offer some lesser quality items for the most part, the complete lack of seasoning (especially at the batter step), not doing the extra step of making sure the gizzards are tenderized, and for the love of God take that country fried steak off the menu if you can't make it better than that.
Kudos for a friendly staff, clean restaurant, quality fry grease and everything was cooked about perfectly. It's too bad the other things bring y'all down.
We picked up our order from here on Sunday July 28th around 7 pm. I know it wasn't cheap for all the things my wife ordered, but I don't have the exact amount, but you can tell from my review all the things we ordered (10 or 12 pieces of chicken, gizzards, livers, double country fried steak, Mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, two...
Read moreWe are frequent eaters at Grandy's at this location. The last time we visited I requested mash potatoes and gravy but added that I would like extra gravy so that I had the same amount of gravy as mash potatoes. My mother had just gotten out of the hospital and needed it to be more liquid like. It wasn't a problem getting it the day before. After paying I looked at the receipt and it read mash potatoes/no gravy and a large gravy. The cost was $9 for this. I asked Anthony why he rang it up that way and he was very condescending, repeating over and over exactly what I said, that I wanted my gravy the same size as the potatoes and that they certainly sell the large size of gravy for $2.99. I reminded him that I ordered mash potatoes with extra gravy so why would you put in that I wanted mash potatoes with no gravy and then order a large gravy. He said if I didn't want the gravy that came with the mash potatoes it doesn't change the cost. It was very disappointing. There was never any inclination to allow for a misunderstanding on his part or mine and he was more argumentative than customer service minded. Seeing that I was getting now where, I told him I had paid for the mash potatoes with gravy so just give me the small one too. We definitely didn't need that much though. At this point, it was the principal of how he did it all. He put napkins in the bag and sent me on my way. I asked if the one piece of fish I ordered was in the bag and he realized he had not given it to me. It came in a box so I asked what all that was since I just ordered a piece of fish. He said it comes with hushpuppy and grits. Not sure if they don't sell just a piece of fish or not so I just took it. As we were walking out of the restaurant, he was repeating to the entire crew what I had said and how wrong I was. Very embarrassing. I would not return. I know this is a very loved restaurant so maybe some training might be in order so no one acts like Anthony did. I'm 67 years old and don't need to be...
Read moreMy friends and I came in for a quick bite to eat while on a road trip. After a bust at the local Dunkin Donuts we decided to give Grandy’s a try. When we walked in, it was a huge mess. The employees were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. We all decided to try the breakfast bar, our first mistake. Even though, the woman attempting to clean it up offered to keep it open for us which was a nice gesture. For about $10 we got the worst breakfast we’ve ever had. It was only after a few bites of the stuff that we put on our plates that we were finished. Even the water tasted horrible. It tasted like drinking a chlorine and iron mixed drink. We tried to express our concerns to the staff and they would not take any of the three of us seriously. The woman came back and said that the General Manager was in a meeting and could not see us at the moment. My two friends went to throw out the rest of what tasted like prison food away, while I went to refill my lemonade, the only decently tasting thing in the entire restaurant. As I was walking back to my friends I could hear the staff talking about us, and they mentioned “kids these days”. Well, for one none of us are kids. And second, as someone who works in customer service, you are to NEVER, not at all, talk about customers in front of any other customers. It sends a negative message about the willingness to help anyone, which is their job. So, overall I would never recommend this “restaurant” to anyone who has ever eaten half decent food...
