This first visit to Tomo Sushi regrettably became its last, almost upon entry, however, in fairness, completing the dining experience was required.
Tomo Sushi has adopted the “scan QR code for menu” model, which presumably expedites the ordering process, addresses handling menus. If that aligns with your preference, excellent. It does not mine.
Laminated menus were provided, upon request, with a highlighter pen, and the instruction to use only ONE menu for ordering.
As is often the case, online ordering seemed to take precedence over in person dining, resulting in additional delays.
While the dining area was virtually empty, the service was erratic, inconsistent, with bagged takeout orders occupying vacant tables.
Generally, this is a cuisine that is intended to be enjoyed when served, not endure further transit.
Once orders were placed, and I will highlight that many chicken dishes feature “thigh” not “breast” (and no option to request), there was a significant delay before even the first appetizer appeared.
Orders arrived at their own pace, with one entree being served significantly before the other.
All of these peculiarities might have been overlooked for exceptional flavor, freshness, and sadly, the entrees were “okay” but far from exceptional in any way. In fact, the belated chicken katsu entree was delivered after it had been sitting, resulting in a “stale” taste where it might have been crisp and juicy. The tempura dinner was served promptly, without inspiration.
In fairness, the sushi offerings of Tomo Sushi were NOT sampled. Perhaps that is a hallmark, however, with NO intention to return, it will remain a mystery.
There are an assortment of cuisine in Burien, although, it is quickly becoming a “burger” oriented predominance with all others lacking and certainly Tomo Sushi excels in...
Read moreI've been to oishis 4 times now. This review was written on 4/11/2015. Oishi is a new sushi spot on main street in burien. It's family run. The chef is a young yet ambitious person. Our first visit we were greeted with beautiful yet delicious sushi. The second time? Same results. There is consistancy. Prices and portions are both fair, erring on the cheap side. (10 dollars for 8 pieces on most rolls) I would recommend the following cooked rolls :rainbow roll, las Vegas roll, and the ninja roll. Considering the low prices, the Sashimi is delicious across the board.
For a family run affordable sushi spot there is a lot attention to detail, especially concerning knife work. The rice is the same thickness around the roll, throughout the roll. The seaweed leaves a little to be desired, but it is never flimsy or flavor less. The fish tastes fresh, and each ingredient is expertly cut. It's worth repeating-every piece of sushi is perfectly assembled. You will have the exact same size of cucumber/avocado/fish/roe/etc in every piece of sushi throughout the roll. This consistency has not changed in any of our 4 visits.
It's worth mentioning that I did have a problem on one of my visits. When I mentioned it, The chef (joey? I believe?) took my criticism gracefully. Upon our next visit joey proudly demonstrated what he had done to resolve my complaint.
To conclude, it's clear to me that the family managing oishi sushi is very proud about their sushi restaurant and are on the fast track for being the best sushi in burien.
I'd also like to add.... Hah just kidding! This review is too long anyway.go there and find out for yourself...
Read moreDelicious eats at a fair price! My boyfriend and I came in on a Saturday night and I'm glad that we didn't let the atmosphere of Oishi scare us away!
We came in at 8:30 with two hours left until closing, and there were two others groups there, so the restaurant was a little dead. The decorations are also a little... muted, but I came for the food, so I didn't really care.
I think this was a mom and pop/family establishment, there was only 1 server, 1 sushi chef, and 1 chef working in the back kitchen. Despite the small staff, we were seated and waited on promptly. The food took about ~20 minutes to arrive after ordering. I was a little antsy, but the wait was worth it.
We got one bento box, zaru soba, tempura, and one roll. I loved it all, but I have to say that the tempura dipping broth hit the spot (I've found it's very hit or miss at Japanese restaurants)! The total came out to the $35-40 range, which isn't bad for dinner for two. I also like supporting local businesses, so it's for a good cause :-)
I noticed after more customers came, the server started helping the chef cook behind the sushi bar, so maybe don't come here if you're in a rush, or order...
