I was a little surprised that they don't take reservations, and knowing I was meeting my friend for lunch on a Sunday around the time the "church crowds" usually show up at restaurants had me a little concerned. Thankfully it was a non-issue, despite the crowd sitting outside, there were still tables inside and out (I opted for one inside). I also felt a touch underdressed, in pants and a tee-shirt, I had checked the website to see if there was a dress code. No one gave me any funny looks, so I'm guessing it was mostly from the church crowd in their Sunday finest that gave that impression.
I also wound up accidentally parking in the office complex right next store, which turned out to be a good thing as the restaurants parking lot was very full, and the offices were all closed, so I wasn't taking any spaces from any possible patrons there.
Kenzie was the hostess, she was genuinely cheerful, despite the steady bustle of people to manage across waitress 'zones' inside and out.
Our waitress was Courtney. She was probably in the weeds at times (just observation of how busy they were, and how many runners they had helping out), she never let that impact her pleasant and patient demeanor.
My friend asked how sweet the sweet tea was, and Courtney thought about it and said "It's pretty sweet." my friend considered his options, and as he did, she offered to do a half-and-half. Now any reasonable restaurant will do this, but it was very nice of her to pro-offer (in a positive/upbeat way).
We had their meat and cheese plate, which was very good in quality and presentation - the latter had a slight backfire as the overlapped slices of cheese were sticking a bit and tough to separate without tearing, and a few of the thinner cold cut slices (which were presented in a nice 'mini rolled' format) stuck as well. Nothing that impacted the flavor, as long as everyone at your table is okay with people using their fingers. :) (I don't care, but I know that's an issue for some people.) The plate also had some seasoned olive oil, peppers, and mild gardenia. It was accompanied with slices of garlic toast that were the perfect size and thickness for this type of dish.
My soup (they call it their classic onion soup -- most people would recognize it by the typical moniker of 'french onion soup') was generous in portion. I did have one bite of cheese that had a little off flavor to it, not that it had gone bad, just something that gave me a moments pause because the departure in flavor was that abrupt. The rest of the cheese/soup was uniformly good. The kitchen did make a small goof and had it come out with my entree instead of with my salad. That soup stays so hot it wasn't a problem to enjoy it and my entree.
My entree was their 'small' veal parmigiana. Excellent portion for it being small. It also seemed to be a good quality cut of veal, my offhand guess is that it's fresh and freshly breaded/cooked. If it were a frozen/semi-prepared veal patty, it's the most amazing one I've ever had. In the course of my conversation with my friend, I had forgotten to ask Courtney about this.
My salad was a Ceasar side salad. It was a very typical salad, and about what you would expect for a salad that is not intended to be the main course.
The kitchen staff is well trained for moving quickly in small spaces and blind corners. We were at a table near the kitchen entrance, so hearing the appropriately volumed "Coming in!" ensured there were no collisions. Same goes for the staff rounding the corner from the hostess area. Despite carrying full trays, they managed with aplomb and were smiling and courteous to customers that were waiting in the lobby to be seated.
I'll definitely be coming back. Thank you for the...
Read moreOur experience was very good right up until it came time to pay the bill. We planned to use a coupon from the local Attractions book. It states "$10 off the purchase of two dinner pasta entrees. Please present when ordering." We waited for 10 minutes before our server arrived, even though another server assisted two parties in our area that were seated after us. No worries as we were not in a rush. She was very pleasant and I told her I had the coupon and she said to give it to her when it was time to pay. We both ordered chicken cacciatore and she asked if we wanted the small or large. My wife said, again, we have a coupon and asked if the difference in the sizes was one piece of chicken versus 2 and she said yes, that's correct so we both ordered small. She was very attentive throughout our meal and the food was very good. However, after we ate she brought the bill without taking the coupon so I reminded her and she said she'd go check with her manager. She came back very quickly and said she was told the coupon was for dinner portion entrees and what we ordered were lunch portion and the coupon wouldn't be applied. This is frustrating for a couple of reasons: If she was properly trained she would know the coupon wouldn't be honored and could've told us when we ordered. (it would've cost a net of $2 more to order the large and we would have had leftovers, probably enough for another meal) More frustrating is that the spaghetti, lasagna and tortellini plates only come in one size so are they lunch or dinner portions? They are basically the same price as the small plates we ordered so would the coupon be accepted for them? Only the parmigiana and chicken plates come in small and large(the menu says small and large, not lunch and dinner) but there's not a separate lunch and dinner menu. After such a nice meal unfortunately we were left with a...
Read moreWent for a special anniversary dinner with my boyfriend. Beautiful outside and inside, but food left something to be desired. Server was very nice and pleasant. He ordered the special which was good and I ordered a $20 steak, potatoes and vegetable of the day dinner. I asked the server what the vegetable of the day was and she told me Asian vegetables. Sounded fine to me. What came with my filet mignon was green beans. And I don't mean fresh green beans, I mean canned green beans. They were inedible. When the server brought over the check and I hadn't touched the green beans (more than the first bite) I told her they were terrible. She immediately whisked our check back away and told us that she would be talking to the manager. The manager (who was also dressed like a server) came over and I expressed again how terrible the green beans were, that they tasted like they came from a can. All the manager did was try to justify to me why they tasted that way and admitted that they did indeed come from a can, but that the cook slow cooks them with seasoning and fat and such -- well this cook must have a dead taste palette because these were just awful. Plus WHO SERVES CANNED GREEN BEANS WITH FILET MIGNON?!?! Manager did nothing on our bill and did not seem at all bothered by my complaint. Talk about terrible costumer service. Wow, just WOW. Beware of $20 dinners served with...
