Historic and kept up nice. The burger was between good and great.
84th Street Burger - $14.50 + 3%: ordered medium, but it was more like medium-well. I am guessing flame broiled. It had that distinct flavor anyway. It was crisped and nearly burnt on the outside, but juicy on the inside. It was delicious, but nothing super special as far as the patty.
The toppings gave it great pazzazz. The thousand island dressing was a great addition and probably worth the 50 cents I paid (along with the onions). The bun was about average, but definitely well executed. The cheese was perfectly melted (very important to me) and really completed the burger.
The shredded lettuce was my favorite part, actually. It is already my favorite way to have it on a burger. The smell of just the lettuce alone made me dive into the burger quickly and I was not disappointed!
Fries - (comes with burger): Standard medium cut fries, but done well. Just a touch salty, but not too bad. I don’t think they were battered, but if it was, it was very lightly. They were great average-like fries. I’d recommend them.
Pan Cookie and Ice Cream - (shared): Shared a pan fried cookie with ice cream on top. I did not get a picture, but it is about what you’d expect as far as appearances. It is very sweet with some sugar granules for texture and deeply flavored heath and chocolate. If you like sweet, you’ll enjoy it for sure.
Service: Average. Kept on top of all our needs with a helpful attitude. The bill was never picked up after about 20 minutes, so we just left it on the table. I don’t think that was standard procedure, but we were not going to wait any longer.
Atmosphere: Very well kept up. I know this is a historic restaurant of at least 75 years. The renovations are still kept clean and tidy! It felt very cozy and clean.
BE AWARE!! They have a 3% surcharge. I paid cash, so it was not for a credit card fee. It is also a fee NOT going to the staff (not a tip). Very few restaurants (I’ve visited more than a hundred in the last one and a half years) are doing this and I believe it is a bad practice. 4GR8FOOD has 14 other brands to their name beyond Grand Coney, so they are not doing this totally without thought or experience, but I still think it is a bit underhanded. It is only 3%, which ended up as 44 cents, but it would be better just to increase your prices. See the 4GR8FOOD website for their surcharge explanation.
Conclusion: I’d recommend Pete’s if you are in Byron Center and want one of the best American burgers in this small town with a cozy feel.

Read moreThis place is a disgrace. I'm just letting everybody know that they just turned around and used my friend. Because they told my friend that he was going to be trained for a new restaurant. However, the new restaurant opened and then they turn around and let him go saying they had too many employees. My friend suffers from mental disabilities, and this place is a disgrace against people with mental disabilities. I will never eat at a place like this that treats people with mental disabilities with disrespect, and I hope anybody that reads this review will do the same. Both Ashton and Heather played my friend by hiring him and having him work 6 days period in which they only worked him 2 days a week my friend was asking them and keeping in contact for more hours. Obviously they didn't care about people. So I advise people to help me boycott this restaurant because they treat people with mental disabilities with disrespect. I have also contacted a reporter to do a story on the business. I have eaten there once and I seen the kitchen from one of the doors behind the bar. Nevertheless, the floor in the kitchen had so much food on the floor everybody was stepping in and was never cleaned. I've also seen people touch their face with their gloves and then start making food with them.
Again as I said Above This Place disrespects people with mental disabilities, and I will never eat at a place that disrespects people with mental...
Read moreSadly after 3 years of going to Petes on a regular basis tonight was my last night that I will give them my money. I have spent on average approximately $150 weekly at Petes. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the people that worked there. Unfortunately that all changed one they were purchased by Jeff Lindell. I have seen a decline in the quality of food as well as the cleanliness and service. I have seen new faces every week since the purchase with some of the longtime staff leaving. Tonight I had a bill for approximately $45, I had two gift cards that totaled $33 but yet my bill came out to $20. I'm not sure what math the server was using but it's not the math I was taught. We attempted to address some of our concerns with the manager and were met with " well your entitled to your opinion" and I "managed the Red Geranium for a year so I know what I'm doing", I knew then that she didn't care what we said and that our business was no longer wanted at Petes. If you read these reviews Mr Lindell, feel free to respond and I will gladly meet and address these issues with you or your representatives. I hated to say goodbye to some of the wait staff as I know them personally but I cannot in good conscious spend my money on bad management, bad food and...
