I sadly have to come back now, about a year after my original 5-star review, and revise to 3-stars (2 stars for food, and 4 stars for staff and service). At that time, Casa Rossy had just opened and it was such a welcome competitor to Manuels which I'd always found excruciatingly mediocre and expensive.
We have a place less than 3 blocks away, so we've eaten at Rossy a lot (I always get take-away) and unfortunately, their quality has taken a real nosedive over the last 6 months. I guess the last straw was yesterday's order of shrimp al mojo de ajo. One taste (and smell) and I knew the garlic was from a jar (it has that distinct citric acid preservative taste) which really ruins the dish. We also got an order of shrimp a la diabla; it was also mediocre and one-dimensional.
This morning, we got Huevos rancheros and and breakfast burrito both with bacon. The bacon was awful: undercooked and rubbery with minimal salt or smoke taste. I was able to pick mine off and just eat the Huevos (which was OK, 3 of 5 stars) but it was much harder to do the same in the burrito and much of that was wasted. FWIW, my wife said if it weren't for the bacon the burrito would have been good and she'd give them another chance.
Overall I have give the food 2 stars.
I do want to say service has remained super friendly and I really like the staff; I'd give service 4- to 5 stars and that's reflected in my overall 3-star review.
Given how close we are, I'll probably still try them from time to time and hope they get past this rough spot but I'll be going to El Chipotle for dinner for the foreseeable future. Original review below.
Casa Rossy opened about 5 months ago. I've now tried them twice two days in a row and I'm super psyched to report that they are excellent. It's so great to finally have excellent Mexican in the hood!!
Prawn super burrito: good size, delicious fillings, guac was included in the price. I always get half rice so it was kinda juicy but I don't mind it that way. Prawns were a tad overcooked for my taste but they weren't outright dry. Just not as moist as perfectly cooked is gonna be.
Super carne assada quesadilla: my wife had this. She wasn't thrilled with it as it turned out the sourcream, guac and salsa were all on the side so she reported it was kinda dry. I tried a bit of the carne and thought it was tasty.
Shrimp a la Diabla - This is one of my favorite dishes so was excited to see it on the menu. Star of the show. So good. Very spicy (I love spicy), smokey, savory sauce. Guac/salsa/sourcream/tortillas all served on the side as I would expect. Shrimp was (again) cooked a tad over for me but just fine. I'll be getting this again (and again and again).
Horchata - Hilariously, this was the "small" size (see picture). The godzilla sized cup, was what, 32oz? I found it overly sweet but otherwise great. Probably won't get again due to sweetness (that said I think this is typical of horchata). It's still sitting in my fridge. I occasionally will take a sip. It's working out that way.
Overall I'm thrilled to have this new Mexican restaurant in the 'hood. I used to have to drive into Capitola for good Mexican,...
Read moreVisited yesterday for the first time, I was told this place opened up bout 7 months ago, right next to Manuel's, which I found just a bit strange having two Mexican cuisine restaurants next to each other like that.My thoughts hopefully there isn't any type of competition going on..but Casa Rossy Gave the "Taqueria " feel with looked like nice seating/ plus they sell tamales by the Dozen. my hubby ordered the carne asada burrito and I ordered a wet burrito on thier " plates" menu section that came with beans and rice.when we ordered I said aloud "this comes with a side of beans and rice right?" She said yes, I specifically orders this for 2 reasons, 1st, I have a 16 month old we share our food with to cut cost when we go out.i also have a 12 year old who basically eats adult meals, we aren't rich, so going out to eat is a treat for us. I went back to car and my husband waited around for our food.when he brought it back I was really excited.🙂 Unfortunately when I opened the bag , there was some juice in it, I assumed it was the enchiladas sauce from wet burrito, which I was ok with, that happens.but when I tried to pull the box out ( cardboard like), the burrito nearly fell out from bottom of box because it sogged through, meaning sauce is now mixed with remnants of cardboard..which I preferred not to eat being I payed nearly 15 dollars for it..my husband agreed. He went back to ask for them to fix it..he brings back the burrito in a plastic container ( which maybe they should have put it in the first place?) With no sauce on it..and no rice and beans on the side..and the burrito was ripped open and falling apart..I'm a really patient person and know that things happen..but this was not what I ordered.I am a diabetic and by this time..I was really hungry..but my husband insisted on going back and asking them to fix it so I had a Granola bars while waiting ..needless to say they told my husband that what I ordered didn't come with rice or beans..and we could have our money back. Really disappointed, My husband said his burrito was tasty. I'm glad the food is good.i was looking forward to trying it. But I ended up getting a plate from Manuels..who used same cardboard box type or plate..but lined with foil and parchment paper..which held sauce in for me..and was able to share with my little one..really sorry for this post..hoping I can try again sometime and things will...
Read moreFamily own business. Was a family favorite, but the last couple of times, my order was incorrect and missing items. The owner is nice and was our initial first experience, which was great. Unfortunately, the last several times as they put it "well he's not here now." The person who worked the last few times was rude, not accommodating at all, would not substitute salsa for pico de gello, was rude when I asked for extra salsa and didn't even give an option to purchase extra. On doordash, they didn't give the salsa ordered, and both times, in person and online order, they forgot my drink I purchased.
Additionally, I specified I was picking up an order for my son and I separate, yet the three tacos were on one plate. For $40 plus a tip, one would think to treat a customer with consideration. It's a shame the owner isn't there all the time because he's a great cook and seems like a nice guy. I still need to drive all the way back to get the Horchata drink missing from my order, but unless I find out the owners schedule and return only when he's there, I think this place is no longer worth it. After a long day of work, I didn't need someone waiving their fingers at me, forgetting my order, refusing requests, and giving me grief. Seriously, I drove 20 minutes to get there for that. NO👎 Now, I need to drive back for missing...
