98% of the time my reviews are positive. But I felt I needed to share our experience. My wife and I decided to try Star for the first time, but when we went in and were told to sit anywhere we then waited for over 10 minutes for anyone to come ask us if we'd like water/drink. We then had as our server a woman who was a little older and possibly an owner. She was pleasant enough at first while we ordered. We told her we couldn't have spicy food, but we'd like the tilapia but with the penang curry sauce. It usually comes with salmon. She said it was no problem to make it with the tilapia instead and make it not spicy. We also got the chicken satay, pad thai and pineapple fried rice. Out of 5 stars I rate the dishes: Chicken Satay- ** Chicken is pounded too thin and long and ends up dry. Pad Thai- * The worst I've ever tasted. Very heavy handed on the tamarind. The dish looked more like pasta with marinara sauce it was so red!! It lacked flavor and we ordered it with shrimp and only got 2 shrimp!! Pineapple Fried Rice- * Rice was ok, but was lacking flavor as well. TILAPIA- 0 out of 5 stars‼ Our server brought us the wrong order. She brought salmon and it was so spicy it almost made me sick. When we told her it wasn't what we ordered she insisted we made the mistake not her. We assured her we ordered it correctly, but her entire demeanor changed and she rolled her eyes and started ignoring us. Then she came to the table and demanded that we ordered another item. So we ordered the fresh spring rolls which were very good. She was mad we ordered those cause they weren't as expensive as the fish. After that she proceeded to walk by our table to check on the customers behind us but ignored us. We had to ask for our bill. We did give her the usual tip. *If you're in Monterey and want excellent thai food try Siamese Bay. The owner is very sweet and he's been there for over 45 years. And if you ask for a no spice sauce his chef gets...
Read moreWe arrived in Santa Cruz from North Bay and was hungry for some good Thai spicy food. Google reports this restaurant 4.6 stars. This should be at least decent. Mostly, I am very optimistic about things. It turned out as average meal with average price, below average service. First waitress was friendly, greeted us and took our appetizer order and left us for the second waitress. The second and younger waitress was not smiling nor was she friendly, who walked by our table repeatedly without stopping by and taking our orders, nor checking to see how we were doing, if we needed anything. We were neglected or, perhaps, ignored. It's bizarre. The tilapia had an off taste, not fresh. Papaya salad was ok but small portion comparing to other Thai restaurants in our experience. After we finished our lunch, I was trying to catch her attention, or someone else's, to order my dessert, instead she responded from 10 feet away, "you like the check?". To which I respond with resignation, "ok" thinking 'I give up'. This has been one of the worst meals we've had so far. She fixed her ponytail in front of the register, then came by to drop our check. Good service is crucial to a successful business...
Read moreReally confused by the positive reviews unless they were written by staff or friends. The restaurant is extremely dated and dark. It’s uninviting and looks like it opened 45 years ago.
There is one person working and she’s doing everything so customers have to wait including takeout customers.
I ordered my food online for takeout and received a confirmation via email that I ordered but nothing was received when my food was ready. It’s incredibly difficult to pull into the parking lot when other cars are on the road — especially if you’re trying to make a left into the lot. I had to drive all the way three times and go all over to be able to pull in.
It took awhile for the one staff member to acknowledge me though I could see my to-go bag on the table. No napkins, no utensils, no sauce packets so make sure you’re getting your food to go home and eat.
The FOOD: The Drunken noodles were a one star at best. No flavor, no sauce, no taste and definitely not spicy. The spring rolls were okay but not great. Wasn’t a fan of the peanut sauce. The garlic eggplant should’ve come with rice but didn’t. The worst part is how expensive it all was. Definitely...
