Read moreMike's Pastry is a Massachusetts staple serving up handmade pastries since 1946! We visited the Cambridge location but they have four total locations in the neighboring areas. They are known for their cannolis, Boston cream pies, lobster tails and more! The atmosphere is clean, small, and cute with some seating near the front window. The service is counter service and was friendly and helpful. The sweets were delicious and made to perfection. This is a small business with few locations so they can keep things consistent, so if you're in the area you need to check them out and see what they have to tickle your sweet tooth!
The wife and I had a slice of Boston Cream Pie and a Chocolate Mousse Cannoli. Being near the Boston area we HAD to try a Boston Cream Pie and it was delicious! The cream in the middle was flavorful and the cake itself was dense and moist. It was topped off with a thin layer of chocolate ganache, whipped cream and a cherry on top. The size was generous for the price of $3.50 a slice.
Our Cannoli was way bigger than we thought and we're glad we didn't get two haha! It was filled with chocolate mousse and dipped in mini chocolate chips on both sides and drizzled with chocolate on top and they ask if you want powdered sugar to top it off before giving it to you. The mousse had a light chocolate taste which was nice and the Cannoli shell itself was huge and crispy with some thickness to it. It wasn't thin or brittle and didn't fall apart when you ate it until like the last bite. For $5 it was a fair deal.
Overall, we wish we could have tried more as there are so many tasty looking things to try here but we couldn't eat another bite after the lunch we had and the sweets here are big portions anyways. This place isn't going to have gluten free or sugar free options so if you're looking for something like that I'd look elsewhere. But if you have a sweet tooth, there's something for everyone here. Try them out!

Read moreYeah, WOW. I came to Mike's Pastry with the singular mission of putting an end to the debate of who had better chocolate-dipped cannolis... Mike's Pastry or Carlo's Bake Shop (Hoboken). I'll be honest, I do not have a big sweet tooth but I just had to do it.
Mike's Pastry wins!
The cream filling swang my vote, I'll explain. Both cannolis were about the same size. VERY important to me is the crunch of the shell, the freshness, the ratio of chocolate to shell, the quality, flavor, sweetness, and consistency of the chocolate. BOTH locations fared extremely well in all of these metrics. Fresh. Great chocolate: smooth and fragrant, but didn't melt immediately in my hand (bearing in mind that I'm writing this review in late December).
The one factor that distinguished one cannoli from another is the cream filling. I'm not sure how to explain this, but you know the coat-your-mouth aftertaste that happens when you eat sugar, oil, and dairy? Carlo's was slightly more 'coaty' in my mouth--left a lingering flavor that was not bad but it wasn't pleasant either. Mike's filling is light, airy, not too sweet, smooth consistency, and did not have a terribly lingering after taste.
Hope you'll try this for yourself and...
