This is a relatively new (as of May 2016) diner-style restaurant in downtown Campbell, just south of the community center in a newly-constructed group of buildings. The fare is breakfast and lunch, with a very pleasant menu (see photos for copies of the menu I uploaded today.)
Food: Fresh, with good ingredients, and well-prepared and presented. I had the Skirt Steak and Eggs - the 5 oz lightly-seasoned and marinated steak was absolutely delicious, and perfectly cooked. I asked for - and got - the eggs poached, and they were perfectly finished, with whites done and yolks creamy, just as they should be. This was served with a generous side of hash browns, and two pancakes, all of which were delicious.
Service: Very good. They were a little slow to take my order, but once the order was in everything else progressed well. The staff seemed busy, they were present but left me alone. But they were friendly enough, and I felt comfortable there.
Facility: The layout here is strange - it's like a long thin rectangle, with doors on each narrow end. Walking in, the place seems narrow, but it's a rather long walk to the opposite end. A counter runs the length of one side, with about 24 seats. Down the middle are a series of about 12 tables, and about 10 booths run down the other wall. The ceiling is high, and the place is very well lit. Bathrooms are large, accessible, and very clean. One reviewer made some vague comment about decor. The walls are covered with large - superlarge - prints of brightly colored food and outdoor scenes with motivational captions. I had no problem with this. Even if I had, you wouldn't go to a diner to enjoy the decor. I don't think that three-star review based on decor was fair.
Parking: One entrance - which turns out to be the rear entrance - faces Winchester Blvd. There is street parking there. A sign just inside the door asking me to "check in at the other end" leads me to believe that the "other end" is the front: it faces a parking lot behind the building with about 20 spaces.
Prices: For Campbell, the prices were excellent. My 5 oz Skirt Stake plate with two large Orange Juices (which tasted fresh squeezed) came to $21.
Internet: They have a Guest Wifi network there for our use. If you're a Comcast/Xfinity customer, you can also log in to the Xfinity Wifi network, which has excellent signal strength throughout the restaurant.
Overall: 4.6 to 4.7 stars for sure. This is your simple, standard breakfast diner, presented cleanly, with good food done well. I highly recommend this if you find yourself in our little town. I'll be eating...
Read moreMy wife and I went to Uncle John’s Pancake House this morning, September 29th 2019. We arrived about an hour after they opened and only about 5 tables were filled. Sadly, not only did the hostess not even greet us, much less say good morning, but simply asked how many of us there were, grabbed the appropriate number of menus and walked away. We assumed following her was in order, did so and sat down. She asked us what we wanted to drink. My tea arrived shortly thereafter but neither of my wife’s drinks were delivered. When the waiter came by and asked for our order still no greeting took place. I made a mistake on my order by requesting the two egg breakfast, thinking I would get the bacon, hash browns and pancakes with it. Order arrived without the bacon. I didn’t realize there was a separate name for the meal that included bacon. The waiter just got defensive and told me that’s what I ordered. And he was correct, but the appropriate response would have been to show me what I really wanted from the menu and bring the bacon. He gets it, only for me to find out when the bill arrived that he charged me for the two egg breakfast and added a $5 side of bacon, which all in was $2 more than the meal I originally thought I ordered. Then he proceeded to argue with me about it. Poor form! If these folks are wanting customers to come back they shouldn’t make an issue of a customer’s mistake, particularly since I was cordial about my own screwup. Instead, he tried to take advantage of it by charging me extra. He finally relented and reduced the bill by $2, which at the end of the day isn’t the whole issue with this restaurant. Simply put, the entire experience didn’t exactly make us feel like “family” as their website leads you to believe. Not once did we get a greeting from anyone, service was terrible and the food average. Nobody said hello, goodbye, nor did they follow up on our needs while there. I don’t believe I have ever not tipped at a restaurant. Indeed, I am almost always a 20% tipper and have been for years. But in this case I could not bring myself to do so, and writing a negative review now, sadly, has to reflect on the complete staff and ownership. Being a small business owner I get the importance of quality customer service. Unfortunately, it was not to be found at this...
Read moreI wasn't going to leave a review but I just wanted Uncle John's to know my experience. I was in San Jose this weekend visiting my family. I got up early on Saturday morning and asked my sister what was a great place to eat breakfast she said the best place in her area was Uncle John's original Pancake house. We went in and the place was packed. So I knew I was in the right place. The First point of contact was the host. I let her know we would like to order to go. She pointed and said go over there. My sister and I looked where she was pointing and we didn't see the register at the end of the counter but she just kept pointing. There was no one else in line so getting better direction could have helped. We go to the register and a very nice waitress came and I let her know it was my first time and she directed me through the menu. I ordered our breakfast for 4 people. We spent $111.00. The waitress texted us when our order was ready and we went back to pick up the order. We walked in and back to the register where we ordered and no one came for 5 minutes. The hostess just sat there and watched me. She did not let anyone know that I was there until I approached her to ask if she could let someone know I was there. Still no one was in line so she was just sitting there. Then the waitress came and gave me the order. I did give her a tip and I proceeded to leave. Both my arms were full and the hostess sat at her podium and did not open the door for me. A friendly customer opened the door and helped me out. I've never been to this establishment before. I'm from Southern California. I'm sure she was having a bad day but I'm not sure when I return to San Jose if this will be my choice as a great breakfast spot. The food was really good and for the most part the service but when I spend money I don't want to be treated wrong. So I do recommend Uncle John's for the food. It...
