We are from Portland but my brother lives in Canby. We went here for a prefathers day celebration last night and had a pretty horrible and now lasting experience really. Pretty much it was a mix of food poisoning, poor quality and tasting meat, and lacking very much in customer service. First off the hostess seated us in line with the kitchen/food route, when my father kindly asked to have a better table next to it, she reacted very snobby and bewildered of why the other table was preferable. Next off my father ordered the New York, my mother and I the "specialty" prime rib. Being around $20 per plate, they were really quite bad. The steak was thin, and chewy, seemed to be a very poor quality cut in general. (I've never seen or tasted New York like that) Our prime rib was icky looking in appearance, lacking in flavor and quite chewy as well. Two others ordered the pulled pork sandwiches. To be honest they were much better then the steak or prime rib in general but the meat and the sauce were bland lacking there as well. They both reported being unhappy. It's as if they have been buying the cheapest meat quality possible. The only thing that was actually tasty was the milk shakes.
Being the previous reviews were so good, we were quite surprised with how bad it was especially for the cost. My poor 4yr old had mac n cheese. She liked it but it was quite like what you would get from a box. She ate that along with bites of my prime rib. The worst thing about it all besides spending $20 a plate on what ended up being dog food for my parents Huskys, my daughter started puking a few hours after our visit and 24hrs later is still vomiting, unable to keep anything down.
She had no other symptoms aside diarrhea since then with no symptoms before our visit, leaving us all to believe that food poisoning of some sort is the most likely reason. I believe her being 4 it has hit her harder then the rest of us, who seem to be ok aside some diarrhea from a couple others at the table.
At the restaurant I didn't want to make a scene, but being a previous waitress myself I knew it wasn't right to be served not 1 but 3 bad meat plates at the table I had to try to kindly tell the waiter. Places I worked there would always be an apology and either the dinners taken off the ticket or an offer to bring out another dish. I caught the server off guard telling him the meat was all very chewy and poor tasting. He did apologize but no other offers to remedy the problems were made. We paid the high bill for poor meals and soon to find out, a food poisoned 4yr old as well. My father ended up having pretty much just the mashed potatoes for his dinner in result of it all and I will have to take the day off work to bring her to urgent care in the morning if she isn't better by then.
I don't know if it was the cook on hand, the recent meat choices, or that days poor hygiene giving the results of all of our poor experiences. But I don't understand why they are so busy from what we all experienced, perhaps there's not much to choose from in Canby. I think they should also work on customer service for there hostess and teach her which tables to avoid when seating people if available. The hostess didn't even say a goodbye or thanks on our walking past out the door. Maybe I was just taught better customer service. All I know is I feel we were cheated overall in food quality and treated poorly, and I'm very upset our daughter has lasting effects of the bad experience. Which in the end has also cost a days work to make sure...
Read moreLoved the happy hour menu and regular menu choices. Not your typical (deep fried only) late night bar menu.
It looks like a lot of their little items are made in house, and they take great care and do an excellent job. The sauces, dressings and salsa and soups and whatnot are all made from scratch. Thee salsa that came with my fish tacos was so good I wanted to ask for a pint of it to take home!! It was a little on the hotter side which is perfect for my taste buds.
I think you can go online to view the menu and prices via their website. There are a great many options to choose from, so they likely have whatever you're in the mood for, be it, a lighter, healthier salad, or a comfort food fatty option, or maybe a hot sandwich, wrap or pasta dish, that spans everywhere between. You'll find something on the menu for everyone in your party.
We arrived after 9 p.m. and ate in the bar area, right inside the door. The noise levels were pretty low. It seems like it was full of patrons that looked like regulars all chatting it up and having a good time. Most tables were good for seating 2 or 4 people. Not a lot of bar-counter seating, but the restaurant area behind the bar, had much more seating and would be better for larger groups without having to rub knees and elbows.
I would definitely return here. Our only complaint, was that there was only one server / bartender and the entire hour we were there, she seemed more interested in wandering around or BS'ing with another staff member, (a dishwasher or busboy?) then she was checking back with patrons. Apparently she was trying to take her break while on clock because she was eating with someone at the end of the bar during 2 of the times we needed attention. We were not the only ones that had to flag her down to get her attention. It seems that there was at least three different times that we kept trying to make eye contact or tried to get attention, but were left waiting for another coveted drive-by moment.
We needed a little extra attention because it was our first time there and we had lots of questions about the beer, food and menu choices. Without any previous experience to go on, we probably had more questions than a usual patron I am sure, so we tried to be patient while waiting to get attention. I would like to try going there again to try many more of their food items, and to see if the service experience is any better. I definitely with 100%certainty, highly recommend the food which seem to be very quality-oriented, and the recipes well thought out and executed. Kudos to the chef in the back whom we got a brief glimpse at whole paying the bill. We hope the next time we come, the food will be a great, but the service a little...
Read moreIm not normally one to complain but I have been to backstop so many times it has been my favorite restaurant for many years now. I have always had good food and decent service. There was a woman who used to work there named Maddison and she was absolutely AMAZING!! We never had issues with her. After she quite me and my fiancée have had terrible luck with servers and managers. We have gotten spicy Mac and cheese more times then I can count and have asked our server a total of 3 times months apart mind you to please remake one of them because it was not the same as the other one. All we got was attitude from the very beginning and was told the 2nd time they will not remake it because we have taken it back to many times. staff was super snotty and as there words “Don’t ever order the Mac and cheese again” we started ordering it online and picking it up so we weren’t dealing with staff because we really love the Mac and cheese and didn’t want to give it up. Everything has been great for a few months and last night we ordered it and we paid for extra sauce on one of them only for it to come with less sauce the normal. The noodles were so dry and gross. We called them and told the manager and she repeated again “ we have so many issues with you guys and I don’t know where to go from here. We can’t make it to your Liking every time. ( again we have only said something 3 times when it’s disgusting for years and we get it all the time) the staff are very unkind and judgy for no reason at all just because I’m asking to fix a mistake so I’m not paying 20dollars a meal for something that is disgusting and that we don’t even eat. The staff treats us like we are the only ones that are not satisfied with our meal and that we take it back every time we go there which is not true.
We will not be returning we tried because we love the spicy Mac and cheese but that...
