I can't understand why this place is so revered by locals, other than the possibility that it's a jingoistic attitude toward favoring local businesses. The thing is, there are much better local places to eat. The food is OK (actually, the Manhattan is very good, aside from the crust, which is as hard as bricks), but the service is impossibly slow and the employees always seem to have a surly attitude about them, as if the fact that you're there is a bother to them. It is also unreasonably overpriced, even by Carrboro/Chapel Hill standards. Give it a shot for lunch if you want to overpay for not much food and bad service. For breakfast, you're better off going to the hot bar at Weaver Street Market where you get more (and better) food for less money from employees who seem happy to see you.
All in all, don't just take my word for it, maybe you'll love it as much as so many people here seem to. Personally, I won't be back. There are too many restaurants in town with better food, better prices and nicer employees to give any more of my hard-earned...
Read moreThis place is ok. I enjoy coming here for the laid back ambiance and the friendly staff but the food has never "wow'ed" me here. The first time I came I ordered the sausage, fried apple, and cheddar biscuit. The biscuit overwhelmed the flavor of the entire sandwich, as biscuits tend to do. The biscuits alone are pretty tasty but I dont think their sandwich pairings are bold enough to be properly paired (i.e spicy anything or a sweet ham biscuit). I know a lot of people may disagree with me on that- yes, I am hard to please when it comes to biscuit sandwiches. So I've also ordered a bacon egg and cheese on white. Tastes like how it would if I made it at home. Which is fine, just not for $6 (about $8/$9 if you include a beverage). Recently I went and ordered the pastrami on rye (also $6). Quite tasty pastrami, a little dry but good flavor, but the sandwich was small and just kind of reminded me again of something I could make at home for cheaper. I havent tried lunch here yet, but maybe that's a better meal to get the bang for...
Read moreThe food was really good, however I found the prices compared to the size of the sandwich to be pretty high compared to nearby places with similar quality. The Rueben they charge $1.25 extra for cheese and $0.75 extra on the muffalata to have it served hot. We paid $28.25 for two sandwiches, didn’t get chips or any extras (did include a 10% tip), and my husband was still hungry when he finished. Just for comparison, at the pizza factory I paid $31(also with a 10% tip) for 2 subs and an order of fries, the sandwiches were about twice the size of Neal’s and one order of fries easily served 2 ppl. So, in summary, the food was good, but I probably would go somewhere else if I was hungry and wanted to spend $14...
