Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint is definitely very eclectic. Even the decor within the restaurant reflects that. You get a diner feel with a taste for Bourbon Street with a slight flavoring of Dia de los Muertos and maybe... a hint of saloon? Sassafras was recommended to my boyfriend and I after we'd been beer tasting at Shoe Tree Brewing Co. Shoe Tree had a couple Sassafras menus and I must admit, I felt 'whelmed' (not over, or under) after reading the menu. After seeing Yelp's 4-stars, my boyfriend and I decided it deserved a try.
We walked in to Sassafras and were immediately greeted by the host. We were sat fairly quickly. Sassafras has a small dance floor for events and our table was on top on it for regular mealtime. There is a stage and what looked like, a full bar as well.
At seeing their full menu, I must admit I couldn't quite come to a decision when it came to food. My boyfriend and I ended up ordering the Superfraggacheesalicious loaf for an appetizer. It does say on the menu to allow up to 15 minutes for it to bake. While I can't say I minded that, it did come out right before our meal. Felt like timing could have been adjusted slightly but overall, I can't say that's a major deal. The bread was warm but the cheese wasn't all the way melted. The cheeses inside sort of complimented each other but it was all so rich and so much, I had a stomach ache the rest of the day.
On top of that, I ordered the cajun mac n' cheese. I did enjoy this entree but it left a little to be desired. The noodles were swimming in cheese and the portion was massive. The cheese sauce was good but I wish there had been some of the cajun seasoning mixed throughout it. It comes sprinkled on top, and the flavor of it is amazing! I almost asked for more of the seasoning to mix in to the sauce; that and a little less cheese sauce would've been good. The shrimp is coated in the cajun seasoning; making for very savory shrimp! My boyfriend ended up with the Falafel salad. The falafel was DELICIOUS! The queso fresco in the middle was a real treat! Other than that, this is pretty much a Greek salad. The tahini dressing might be made in house. There was some real acidity to it, making the dressing almost seem a little sour.
I believe Sassafras is a Carson City local 'spot'. The waitress was very kind although maybe a bit distracted. My meal was very cheese heavy and perhaps a little too much for one sitting. I enjoyed it but would be on the fence as to whether or not I would go back. I love to try things so I would recommended trying it out; you may find yourself...

For my friend's birthday, she requested this restaurant and I am so glad she did. Eclectic is one of the descriptives this restaurant uses, but I'm going to use "delicious." She wanted the Superfraggacheesalicious Loaf and I will probably dream about this cheesy, garlic loaf for a while. The flavor is so intense. I could have stopped after this and been very happy but we were all really hungry and there were just so many things to try.
I also ordered the Black and Blue Shrimp Fondue. This is just the right level of creamy. The shrimp were cooked right and this is the best fondue I have ever had a restaurant. The only dish I didn't like was the Ham and Brie. I substituted turkey for the ham for dietary reasons but the bread had an overwhelming flavor of cooking oil rather than a buttery toasted texture that over powered the meat and cheese. I don't know if this was a normal occurrence or just my usual bad luck but I had ordered plenty and didn't really need to eat it. I did eat the homemade fries that came with it though and they were great. Normally I like to dip my fries in ranch but their blue cheese dressing is to die for. Even if you usually don't like Bleu Cheese, try it. They also come served with homemade ketchup which was also very tasty. Top it off with s mango Italian soda and you will have had the ultimate culinary party.
My friends ordered the gumbo, the chimichanga, the cheese curds and a salad. We shared most everything and had plenty of leftovers to enjoy later. I had trouble getting pictures because I couldn't wait to dig in.
Also, a big shout out to our server Nina! She was very attentive and we didn't wait for anything. She checked on us often and is a great conversationalist. Her service rounded out a pretty much...
Read moreBeen here few times before and this place has lost it. The chef and manager must've been out this day because this was the worst dining experience Ive ever had. I should've known to leave when our waitress came over high as a kite and unfocused. We started with the calamari - looked as if it was already ate by the staff before arriving to our table. We were looking forward to the lavender martinis. This time It was more like a lemon drop martini with old lavender flakes and the glass was sticky. They were way better before and use to be purple with lavender essences and came with a purple sugared rim and topped with a lavender bud flower. Who ever was working the fryer that day must've been new or they had the dishwasher working the fryer because the fries were soggy, old and unappetizing. I couldn't think these fries could get any worse until I dipped them into what they called "house ketchup". I asked for regular ketchup which was nonexistent. Their take on ketchup should be an embarrassment. We also ordered the stir fry pork belly. The dish looked somewhat appealing at first glance but after the first bite my stomach started to get upset. They used too much vinegar or something. All in all we went to have a good dinner and most places don't have it all but they make up for it somehow but THIS place has failed at all levels. I think it's because they started to cut too many corners. Receipt is posted in case management wanted to refund or...
