Dined on 3/19/23: I’ve been a diner at Chompies in Chandler for years, but it’s been about six months since I went there this past Sunday for their St. Patrick’s Day corned beef dinner. I was shocked at how disappointing this was this time, because I have done this event each year. The advertised flyer said it would run Friday through Sunday. The Beef was sliced paper thin, resembling the shaved corned beef over in their deli counter. It was extremely dry and curling up on the edges. The wedge of cabbage was almost raw, it was so undercooked. I cannot even cut it with my knife. The “roasted potatoes” were not roasted, they were merely boiled. Everything on the plate was dry as a bone, no cooking juices or “pot liquor” at all. The meat was very tough. Our waitress took it back to the kitchen to try to remedy it and have the cabbage cooked some more, but what they brought back was still so tough I could not eat it. I spoke to the manager while I was waiting for the replacement and he said this was the first year they were extending that dinner all through three days, Because St. Patrick’s Day was on a Friday that year and a lot of people don’t eat meat on Friday this time of year for religious reasons, so they extended it through the weekend.and they don’t think they will do it that long again. He apologized about the cabbage and offered to replace it but I told him I was waiting for it to come back so I could see if it was better. It was not much better. I will not return again for this St. Patrick’s Day special. It is completely over priced for what they served. In previous years, it was a delicious and succulent meal. I suspect they ran out of boiled corned beef on Friday and Saturday, and so for Sunday they resorted to the Finley shaved lean corn beef from their deli case. There is something changing at Chompies, and in an unfortunate way. They have completely dropped their delicious meatloaf from their menu, and they no longer list the barley beef soup. You have to ask for it specifically anymore. This used to be my husband and I‘s favorite home style restaurant, for years. But sadly, no more I’m afraid. The waitress was excellent so none of this was her fault, and she tried to accommodate my legitimate complaints about this meal. I’m sorry I did not take a picture, because I did not plan at the time to post a review. But the more I now thought of this complete waste of money, the angrier I’ve become about it. So...

Let me start by saying we've been going to Chompies for two decades. Then the Tempe location closes by ASU so we started coming to the one by Chandler fashion Center. It's been slowly going downhill at this location and today pretty much topped it off. We came in for an early Mother's Day lunch and regret it. Normally I wouldn't say anything but after we found my friend's mom crying, I had to. The soup with our dinner that we ordered came out before dinner and we didn't want to have half our table eating while they other half had to watch, this why we had ordered it with the food and explained as such to the waitress. Instead the kitchen staff brought it out and walked away. The waitress stayed away from our table until the actual meal came out and when we said something about it coming out early and being cold, were told just "yeah I saw them bring it out" and nothing else. You did help us with a long debate on if the potatoes were really or instant though! Definitely instant as they weren't even really mixed for the two dishes that got them. The green beans were over cooked and freezing to the touch. The turkey and chicken were over cooked and tough to eat, with the breading on her schnitzel being hard and burned. The dressing under my turkey was cold and rubbery. My friend's mom had the eggs Benedict and her eggs were rubbery, cold, and the holindaise sauce was tasteless. The bread underneath looked like someone tried to roast it and the edges were burned black. We opted to get dessert elsewhere after that. From having come in for over 20 years, having visited Chandler, the first location up in Phoenix, and even Tempe when it still existed, multiple times each; but having the last few times at Chandler being so bad in the food; to now having been so horrible that her mom was crying... To those who want to try something new, find another place. Do not visit this location. The food is inconsistent and usually horribly cooked. Save your money and go elsewhere as we sure will be...

I have enjoyed Chompies in PV and Scottsdale for many years with nothing to say but praise for food and staff. I have been to Tempe twice now and will not be returning. These were a few of the reasons why. Dining in late lunch I ordered a cup of coffee. It was obviously very old. I asked if they could brew a new pot and was told that it was a full pot and "wasn't very old" and because of the time they would just have to throw it out if they made a new one. On this visit I was also given my check at the same time my food was dropped at my table and never asked if I was ok or needed anything else, etc.. I placed a to-go as well on-line to pick up at the front. I checked it before leaving and verified everything was there but upon opening the order, again coffee could not have been anymore burnt than it was, I was given chicken noodle soup instead of matzoh ball, and got a pastrami sandwich instead of brisket. Makes me ask myself who is in the kitchen at this time? Did they send everyone home because it was slow? How does this happen?! Not what I wanted but at least the food is good, all but the burnt coffee which was fertilizer for my garden. (Not all lost)

I was extremely disappointed upon going into the ladies room to find dirty sink/ vanity areas, paper strewn about in the floor, NO toilet paper in 2 of the 3 stalls, (I suppose it was all in the floor), no seat liners in the only stall with the tissue (of course) and someone thought it a good idea to have 3 different cans of air freshener spray cans in various places around the restroom, an old-style gel type air freshener, and an oil stick diffuser. I truly believe everyone would much prefer to smell a clean sanitary restroom to a dirty one with cheap "perfumy" scents to attempt to over power lingering bathroom odors. So here, directly before beginning your meal, you wash your hands and leave the bathroom with these images, a nose full of smelly chemicals and are expected to enjoy a meal. ...

My husband wanted to try this place and I was prepared to only have a drink as someone with celiac disease. Apparently Chompie's used to have a gluten-free menu but no longer have a separate menu nor do they have a marked menu. Unfortunately the website doesn't reflect this information and still displays a "gluten-free friendly" page with information about accessing their gluten-free menu. Today their website reads: "You’ll find the scrumptious gluten-free goodies you’ve been craving on our restaurant menu and at our bakery counter. Our gluten-friendly menu was created with gluten allergies and gluten sensitivity in mind. Browse our Menu for gluten-free friendly menu items as well as selections on our Kids' Menu. You may also order gluten-friendly items from our online store." The waiter told me that although they don't have a gluten-free menu anymore, the omelets are just cracked eggs with no additives like other famous breakfast chains. He said they could make an omelets gluten-free as long as my side was fruit because the potatoes are t celiac-safe. I had the $16.28 chorizo con queso omelet with a side of fruit and a gluten-free bagel. I asked that they neither toast it nor cut it to prevent cross contamination. They brought me a serrated knife to cut it myself. My husband had a not gluten-free pastrami sandwich for $15.99 and he liked it. Overall, my meal was fine but I wouldn't come here as a celiac by myself. There's just way too much gluten that could potentially cross-contaminate the meal. As an aside, one thing that bothered me that wasn't food related was that their male busser was listening to music and then having a facetime conversation with a woman with his phone tucked into his hat. I don't care if staff listens to music provided they're using headphones. Nobody wants to hear a facetime conversation or someone's music on a cell phone in public. Visited: December 2024

It always baffles me when a company would rather say, we are waiting for a shipment to come in for something they forgot to keep an accurate inventory on… wouldn’t it elevate the service game to have stopped at a store before coming in or noticing you were out of something that is expected by your patrons and ordering on time? Operationally, when an item is purchased in bulk, there are steps to notify you when a good time to reorder is. I used to like this place, and this happens too often. Sadly, it isn’t the food that gave this place two stars, it’s the efficiency. These restaurants are making it easier to want to just stay home and cook. I bet they still want a tip. Here is one: stop excuses and solve. Dolyn is enough to not come back. She doesn’t have any personality or accuracy until it is time to give the check and she expects a tip. A tip is to insure prompt service… that is non existent with her. She didn’t crack a smile until she gave us the check. We didn’t get refills but as soon as we were served our meal, she dropped the check off. Maybe retraining in customer service and table touches should be offered. I am usually impressed with this establishment and took my family from Tucson to show off and this backfired… we would have much rather had Katie. We still tipped 20% to hopefully show her, you can ruin our breakfast but we would hope she can get a clue to elevate her service. Basics 101 of refilling drinks, utensils to eat our food with, a smile or remembering the order we placed in the handheld… we didn’t ask for much, just accuracy and a smile. The picture is from rubbing against the table, maybe cleaning and/or sanitizing standards are also a priority?

Came here today for lunch as a friend mentioned their deli style sandwiches, and matzo ball soup. I came famished after a long morning filled with meetings. My server was Nick. He did a fine job. I started my meal with a large bowl of matzo ball soup. The portion size was right; with two matzo balls. The downsides are this: it tasted a bit salty; it came served with noodles; there could have been more vegetables 🥕and celery; and it could have been served hotter than what it was. The spoon was small for my liking, but Nick found me a bigger spoon. The other thing I didn’t understand was this big bagel chip. The other part of my meal was the classic Grandpa’s Reuben. The creamy coleslaw was best. The corned beef was piled high; and a bit fatty. But I liked it. There was a right amount of sauerkraut, and 1,000 island dressing. The Swiss cheese was fine. I was wondering about what was missing, and it came to me as I finished my soup. No pickle. NO PICKLE! You call yourself a New York style deli, and then serve a good sandwich with no pickle. I like good food. I’m willing to drive to Palm Desert to eat at Sherman’s. Their soup and sandwiches are amazing. If Chompie’s was five hours away I wouldn’t drive to eat there. They’re ok. Soup $9.99. Reuben $21.99. Drink$3.29. Subtotal of $35.27; with tax the total was $38.13 not counting the tip. P.S. Stopped by their dessert counter and grabbed a lemon bar, and Napoleon… $12+change ‘To Go.’
