For our love of Indian Cuisine, we decided to try Feringhee – Modern Indian a well reputed establishment by both Phoenix Magazine and the Arizona Republic. Both my wife and I are keen to Indian Cuisine, although my wife more so, so we were really intrigued at the aspect of checking Feringhee out. It being touted as ‘Modern Indian Cuisine’, it’s been given to high expectations by those such as Nikki Buchanan (of Phoenix Magazine in 2022) stating: “If you like Indian food, you will absolutely love Feringhee, a charming restaurant putting a modern spin on an ancient cuisine”. Nikki, you are so right! I think anyone who takes advantage of stopping in, savoring the fare, enjoying the atmosphere, can and will be excited by such a statement. The moment you walk in, you will be struck by the incredible combination of modernistic, yet old world atmosphere of colors, brightness, artifacts, design, space and furnishing. Seating is comfortable, one of the most superb bars I’ve seen, with every square inch detailed to enhance one’s panorama as well as not mar your palate with extravagance. Head Chef Caran Mittal took the time in graciously visiting our table and explained his culinary concepts behind one of the most remarkable Indian Cuisine meals we’ve encountered in the Valley in years. His interpretations and development of North and South Indian foodways with hints of Kashmiri influences he was artistically able to create a mesmerizing taste extravaganza. Mittal has taken the myriad Indian regional influences which this space will not allow to describe, to create a freshness to the cuisines that must be experienced to be appreciated. From the beginning of our visit to the end, our experience was enhanced by our most illustrious and professionally skillful waiter, the inimitable and energetic Mohamed, who expertly and thoroughly explained, identified and demonstrated at our servings some of the intricacies and foci of our meal. A man with a terrific personality and articulateness with conveying the details of the meal we are enjoying so much. Our sitting began with libations that were as unique as the rest of our experience: the Murrraba Mule and The Botanist. You’ve never had this good a Mule before and worth a try! As for starters, we began incredible rendition of of a deconstructed Samosa Pinwheel Chaat, making it incredibly unique, and Lamb Keema with amazing blend of aspects and aromatics. Superbly prepared and incredibly rendered! We were overtaken by the delectable wafting aromas as the dishes were being served – we were enjoying our meal even before trying the first morsel! Our mains consisted of the Old Delhi Butter Chicken and the Kashmiri Mutton Rogan Josh. Both superbly assembled, incredibly arranged, and unmistakenly delish. Especially my selection of one of the most fantastic Lamb dishes I have ever had the opportunity of enjoying, with its Persian influence, and delectable curry and the just right hints Cinnamon, Cardamoms, Fennel and chili! The Dehli Butter Chicken was not far behind in excellence, especially when my wife actually said it was the best she’s ever encountered. Feringhee may mean Foreigner in Hindi, but we did not feel so. Caran and Mohamed as well as your superb staff, we promise we will be returning, again and again. A visit here will not be a cheap date, but for the incredible experience, treatment, aesthetics, and cuisine, not to mention value, it is well worth every penny spent. We shall return. अपने भोजन...
Read moreUpon our arrival I noticed a paper sign on the front door stating a dress code (no shorts, sandals, etc). I’m glad we dressed the occasion. We were greeted by a friendly host and immediately sat. The restaurant is new and the interior nice with traditional Indian flare/decor. We were handed a drink menu, which was in a nice binder. However, the food menu was just a two page paper menu that was stapled together. I didn’t mind at all, but a little odd I thought due to them trying to create a high end dining experience.
The server was nice, greeted us, filled our waters and then walked away. We both found the interaction to be mildly awkward. It was a good while before they returned to take our drink and food order. They have a wine list as well as cocktail list, which ranged from $18-$21.
We ordered two cocktails and 3 appetizers/small plates. Our appetizers were brought out before our cocktails made it to the table. The cocktails presented beautifully, with one being covered in a smoke glass covering that was lifted upon being set down with aromatics to be swept over us. They tasted very good. Our appetizers/small plates were also exceptional. The fruit salad, pork belly and chutneys were all very good, uniquely prepared and bursting with flavor.
Our small dishes were awkwardly removed and replaced while we were still finishing the appetizers. Right after a busser came asking if he could clear the newly placed dishes.
Our server removed our finished cocktails as dinner was set down but never asked us if we wanted additional drinks before walking away, which we were both planning on trying more. So we just settled on our water. For entrees we had the butter chicken and the paneer with two sides of naan. Neither of our entrees came with rice, so we assumed we should have ordered it from the sides if desired. However, both the entrees were fantastic. The sauce and the protein in both dishes were cooked perfectly and flavored so well.
For dessert we tried the chocolate cake and the coconut panna cotta. Both were absolutely excellent, with my favorite being the panna cotta. The passion fruit sorbet was an amazing flavor punch in the dish! Since we never got the chance to order additional cocktails we asked the server for coffees/espresso’s from the dessert menu, unfortunately, we were advised their coffee machine was broken at the time.
Feringhee is hands down 5 stars for the food alone. The modern Indian fusion food was unique, beautifully presented, and packed with flavors…new and unique ones with some of the traditional Indian flavors you know and love. The manager was professional and checked on us twice. The chef came out to present and explain the main entrees to us as well. With the price point, the dress code, and the desire to present this establishment as fine dining the service has a ways to go.
I still highly recommend this location and plan on returning to try...
Read moreUpdated review: We came back again for early wedding anniversary and the food+services seems to have dropped drastically. I have been here total of 4 times now and I can say with each visit my expectation went down. They do not have adequate staff and the food doesn't taste as good as it did. Truly disappointed!
Old review: We came here for our 1 month wedding celebration. To begin, yes, the place is quite expensive but worth each and every cent. Based on other reviews we really didn't have high expectations but were quickly proven wrong. We had made our reservation using OpenTable and I would recommend to do so as the place was completely packed. A gentleman greeted and led to our table. Immediately we were greeted by a lady who welcomed us and gave a quick brief down about the restaurant and walked us through the whole menu. As mentioned above, based on previous comments on small serving we ordered few appetizers and entrees and realized we ordered way too much😅. I would recommend 2 appetizers and 2 entrees for 2 people. For appetizers we had: masala ricotta kulcha, cauliflower 65, Chaat, mutton ghee roast. Kulcha is served with amla pickle which is one of the best pickles I have had so far. The first piece of Cauliflower 65 was bit raw. However the rest of the pieces were well cooked and flavorful. The Chaat and goat appetizer were the highlight. Mutton dish is served on uttapam and well spiced. The yogurt mousse on chat was too good. The idea was brilliant. We were quite full here and had packed the mutton ghee appetizer to take away. For entrees: Seasonal squash kofta, butter chicken, jackfruit biryani with tandoori roti and garlic naan. We barely had a couple of spoons here and packed everything and had it next day for lunch. The kofta filling was amazing as well as the curry. The biryani was perfectly flavored not too spicy nor bland (didn't like the jackfruit pieces though). The butter chicken comes with 3-4 big chunks of juicy chicken pieces. The dish had a bit overwhelming tangy flavor from tomatoes but rightly spiced. It worked well with the garlic naan. And for desert we had panna cotta. This is a must to end the meal with. We really enjoyed the food and the service at Feringhee and will be...
