I have followed Ono since it opened this past summer and really like this place! The owners Scott and Cyndi Hoffman have put their hearts and souls into creating a place that serves great beer, is family friendly, showcases their Hawaiian experiences, builds community, and makes you feel welcome and like one of the family.
Their self-serve beer wall model is unique and I love it. You receive a beer card that allows you the pour your own beers from the beer wall. You select and are in charge of the exact amount of beer you pour and get. You pay for only what you pour and drink. As someone who likes to try a variety of beers, but for health reasons can't drink large quantities, this is a perfect system. My husband samples a few, then finds his favorite of the night (selections change and many are seasonal) and fills up. It is a win-win for all preferences. The beers are delicious and varied. You would be hard-pressed not to find at least one that you love. Growlers are available and they are starting to be available/featured in local restaurants too.
Ono is a great community brewhouse. The owners are always moving around the room talking to customers, swapping stories, giving tours, and they care deeply about customer feedback and experience. They host game nights (Bingo and they also have board games on hand to borrow and play while you are there), music performances (there is a great connection to the Hawaiian community with traditional musicians and dancers performing), and even yoga. Since this is a self-service place, there are no waiters to tip. However, a tip jar is located at checkout and all money from it is donated to a local community charity/cause-of-the-month.
Light packaged snacks are available for purchase, as are some sodas and water, but you may also bring in your own food or have food delivered there. They provide menus for local eating establishments too.
I encourage everyone to stop by Ono and give them a try. I suspect they will become your new favorite go-to place. This is a new business and the owners want to make this a special place for everyone. As such, they are extremely receptive to comments and suggestions. Give them your business, you...
Read moreI just want to start off by saying that I do occasionally work in the tasting room, but I honestly love the atmosphere and the concept of Ono Brewing Co and am writing this review as a fan. I live half an hour away and I always try to make it back to Ono as much as I can when I'm not working.
The self-serve system is so much fun to use and it makes tasting beers cost-efficient and easy! Being able to try a sip of a beer without having to pour a full glass is AWESOME! There is no up charge for taster flights like you get at other breweries, and if you don't feel like a full 16 oz pint, you can pour an 8 or 10 oz glass instead. You have total control over how much you buy.
The nicest part about the atmosphere is that you choose how much you want to interact with the staff. If you're worried about not having a bartender to talk to and help you find a beer to your liking, try talking to the tasting room attendants. I genuinely love talking to patrons when I'm working there and all of the other staff members are just delightful people! More importantly, you never have to wait for a server to get another drink or more water. Again, you're in total control.
As for the beers, I am a huge fan. I am constantly updating my own personal favorites when they release new beers (which happens almost weekly). The 8 beers they have on tap are always changing, so every time I visit, I have new things to try.
If you have not been, I highly recommend trying Ono Brew Co. They have definitely tapped into something special with this self-serve philosophy and I am sure we will begin to see plenty of imitators in the near...
Read moreEverything was going well until an almost unnoticeable detail occurred as I was checking out. The reason I am giving it one star is because as I was closing my tab, the cashier reached over to the keypad (I believe to turn the keypad toward me) and very quickly and sneakily pressed the 20% tip button while sliding her hand away from the device — all without any prompt, guidance, or authorization from me. There was no communication about this whatsoever -- she just selected her own tip amount before I happened to notice it, change it, and insert my card to pay. This is a very sneaky practice and this establishment’s management should be ASHAMED of taking advantage of their customers like that. This is a place that SELLS ALCOHOL for people's enjoyment. I can’t imagine how many customers they must have cheated already without them even realizing it. Also, I want to add that this place is entirely self-serve. The draft beer is self-serve, customers retrieve their order from the counter, the food is served on disposable plates with plastic disposable silverware, disposables are thrown in the trash and trays are put back by the customers. Please don’t ever take advantage of your customers like that. By trying to do something shady like this, you actually end up losing more than you were trying to...
