Hot weather just isn't the time to eat a big bowl of spicy, hot chili with a big mug of steaming hot coffee/cocoa. Now that it's getting to be "Salad Season" (aka Summertime) the hotter the outdoor temps, the more I want to eat cooler foods. You know...like a half gallon of ice cream/sherbet or a dozen Popsicles with a tall glass of iced tea! ANYTHING that I don't have to turn on the stove & cook!
Fortunately Bob Evans Restaurant (in Kanawha City) is a good solution. Easy to find right off the interstate, with plenty of parking & reasonable prices, & like so many other restaurants BER has revamped their menu in the past year or so. You can get everything from great breakfasts (++Western omelets) to various lunch & dinner choices & serving sizes are good. There's also a budget priced (under $8.) menu section with slightly smaller portions but still plenty of food for smaller appetites. Some new menu items include a selection of various beers & wines, about 4-5 flavors of iced teas, & a chocolate/mocha/caramel coffee that's great for dessert.
Personally, I like munching salad but I hate all the extra prep (washing, chopping, dicing, etc) required every time I want something healthy & cooler for dinner. This time of year is when BER really does the best salad entrees...fresh, crisp, plenty of "extras", a good variety of salad dressings... i.e. not just a big bowl of lettuce. I definitely recommend one of the chicken combo salads like the strawberries & poppy seed dressing, or the summer berries, or the cranberry/pecan version. But if you like your salad a little spicier try the "Wildfire Chicken Salad".
The restaurant's decor isn't fancy or "exotic" which just means it's a simple, relaxed family friendly place. But we go there for the food & the convenience, not for the decor & atmosphere. It can be busy especially on Sundays when the "church crowd" is there, or certain holidays. We were there on a Thursday (about 5:30-ish to 7:30p) dining & talking with friends in a smaller practically private, side dining room.
BTW...our waiter, Daniel, was super friendly, organized, prompt, & efficient. He was very knowledgeable of the menu, communicated clearly, & was very professional...more like a waiter in a fine dining restaurant than a family restaurant. Daniel made us feel like we were his most important customers. Frankly, that's a very refreshing change from so many other restaurants' wait-staff...many of whom are inattentive, disorganized, surly & sometimes just downright rude. Yet another thing we can thank Covid for! We definitely plan on returning to Bob Evans Restaurant thanks to Daniel's amazing customer service & hopefully Daniel will be our...
Read moreI try to give grace to businesses because I know how it goes sometimes. But I couldn’t stay silent this time. I would absolutely NOT recommend delivery from them whether thru doordash or restaurant directly. (Though thru doordash you can at least get a refund for the missing items since doordash takes care of it). Ordered $60 worth of food for our family tonight and was missing the almost $6 piece of pie from the order. So I called the restaurant to make sure I wasn’t charged for it…. who told me I could either come get missing food myself because the driver “forgot it” if I wanted it or bring in a receipt next time…. But they “couldnt refund” right now, I would have to stop in tomorrow for that if I wanted one. All of which sort of defeats the ENTIRE POINT of paying for delivery. If I wanted to go to the restaurant or had time to go to the restaurant I wouldnt have spent money on a delivery fee and driver tip! I will not be going there anytime in the near future to “bring in my receipt” (which how does bringing in my receipt prove anything? Guessing I’ll be told too bad when I do!). But this isn’t an isolated incident - several months ago I was missing food as well. Thankfully that was a pickup order and we checked before we left the parking lot so we could go get the missing food!
On top of that food we did actually get was subpar compared to prior visits, especially for the cost - dry & overcooked chicken tenders (3 tiny tenders for the cost of that meal too!), "mixed fruit" was grapes still on vines & unrip cantaloupe, rolls were soggy from leaked lemonade pouch they put in same bag, and more. However, I will say the chocolate cake and strawberry lemonade was good at least.
But this location used to be good and somewhere our whole family enjoyed coming to eat at, but the quality but has definitely gone way down hill recently. I think I will order elsewhere in the future and save myself the headache of dealing with their lack of care or...
Read moreWe stopped here wanting to get something good to eat because we had just finished driving across country and wanted real food.. We walked in and were hit by the worst smell ever. It was so bad we almost left because it was disgusting.. My husband walked to the other side of the restaurant and the smell wasn't bad over there.. We were tired and hungry so we said ok we will make this work.. I asked for extra crispy bacon and hash browns and got neither.. The bacon was bearly done and the hash browns weren't crispy at all.. I got a little scoop of hash browns. My husband got twice as much as was on my plate. I got what you would expect for a kids serving not an adult serving. My husband's food was just ok and his hash browns weren't cook enough either.. I gave 2 starts because our waitress was awesome! She is on her game. Alyssa rocks.. The lady at the register was a fake as you get. We brought up the smell to her and she didn't seem to notice it.. Then when we told her is was worse by the front she rolled her eyes.. When I went pay she says everything turn out great? I said no our food wasn't cooked right but it was edible but our waitress was awesome.. She acted like ok just it out of here.. My husband and I both have worked in restaurants and so we know how things are supposed to be and give credit where it's do because we know how hard the job can be at times.. I'm honestly not sure how many people walked in smelled the stench and walked out and others might have just eat there because they were hungry...ps the smell wasn't coming from the bathrooms we both used the bathroom and it didn't smell as bad in the bathroom as it did by the front doors and over by the register..Had we not been just tired and hungry we would of taken our...
