As a Southerner I have a hard time recommending or giving a high level review of a chain BBQ restaurant, even if its a small local chain. I grew up on the barely standing, probably not even legal BBQ shacks that usually only the locals knew about. However, I am proud to recommend and highly review Jim 'N' Nicks. I have visited multiple times and multiple locations and they are all great, each time.
To start us off, the muffins... They bring you a basket of mini cheese muffins and these babies are to die for. Slightly warm and and perfectly sized, these things are deadly. My baseline for BBQ is either chopped pork or brisket. Brisket tends to be pricier and more of a commitment so if it's a first time experience I go for chopped BBQ then if its good enough I'll try brisket on my next visit. Jim N Nicks was no different. While I liked them both I do think the brisket, though tender and juicy, has the evidence of commercial cooking. As this is obvious why, and very good regardless I never see the smoke ring or taste the smokiness I am use to. Again, still a great brisket.
Mac and cheese is a must. Very creamy and flavorful, making you want to choose two mac and cheeses as your two sides.
On my last visit I finally tried the wings. They advertise a honey habanero sauce which sounds half good to me. I don't like a ton of sweet with my food but I do love spice. After discussing the wings with the waiter he gave me the option do go straight habanero. A dicey play but one I was willing to take. These might be my new favorite wings. The wings are smoked and then flash fried to give it a grilled consistency of crispiness. I did not taste alot, if any, smokey flavor (which is what I was concerned about). And the habanero sauce was not spicey at all. It had a slight "twang" at the end but nothing to worry about.
Overall, staff and food were awesome and highly...
Read moreOk so no resturante is perfect but there's a lot here which would make me wanna rate 3 stars but frankly 3 stars isn't something this place deserves. First and foremost, i wasn't there for the dinner rush so my experience might be off, that being said the people serving the food were great, most of the food was great and the atmosphere didn't get in the way. The time in which some of the food got to me wasn't perfect but it got here hot and most of it got here good, Jim 'N Nicks is a good resturante to go to if you want good food, with one exception, the wings there are some of the worst I've ever had and i was sick afterwards, first and foremost somehow the wings got everything about wings wrong, the only part of my mouth that felt the spice was my lips and i wasn't making out with the wings mind you. i was eating them! So i tried to add hot sauce to the mix and their hotsauce is the worst hot sauce I've ever had, it was like they just put vinegar and chillie powder in a bottle and called it a day, it wasn't great. With that said i would like to end things off where i started, those wings may be bad enough that i have a good bit to say about them but they aren't bad enough to make me forget about the rest of my experience here. Most of the food was great, the staff were great, tables were clean and the atmosphere had a warm vibe, time wasn't perfect but you try running a restaurant. Wings were terrible but it's not was this place is known for. If the wings made it off the menu and the timing was improved a bit this place would deserve 5 stars. I aim to be realistic in both meaning and impact with this review it's not 5 stars but i would recommend it. I hope my review helped,...
Read moreWe were excited to visit the Charlotte location at Steele Creek as we had heard many great things about the chain. Our waitress told us she was new as she took our order. It did not worry us at the time but it probably should have. The service was some of the worst we have ever experienced. We ordered an appetizer and never received it. Another waitress finally brought us some of the cheese muffins. They were the highlight of the visit and very good. Our waitress had not returned in a very long while and had no idea we didn't get the appetizer. Finally, our food arrived. The pulled pork was average. My wife's burger was average and in desperate need of some condiments but we were never able to ask our waitress for any. My brisket was tough and very hard to eat. Flavor was also subpar. I was very disappointed. Our gluten free child had to eat snacks we brought for him because we never got the appetizer for him to eat. My other son got a slider meal and I was impressed with the amount of food he got on his plate. It took so long I eventually had to take my children out before she even brought our check. When she finally did return, she acted upset that we were gone and made a comment about us not wanting dessert apparently. My wife indicated that we didn't get the appetizer and the waitress acted shocked that we didn't. Another table near us did not get their food either and the manager took care of their entire meal. Their waitress was very apologetic about it and we barely got a sorry for our problems. We won't be back to any Jim N Nicks over this experience. The cheese muffins alone are worth going back, but we just cannot put ourselves...
