I love donuts, so I take this stuff seriously. The owner/manager welcomed me in, I said I was glad they were open, he said they had been open since Wednesday. I was going to get a dozen, but they keep them in foil pans so you can't see what they look like. I had to ask what kind of donuts they were since it wasn't clear if they were cake or yeast, since you can't see them. The menu is written in chalk so I will assume they will have a variety. I got a chocolate frosted and a filled.
I got a filled donut not knowing what it was filled with. I was expecting like a long john with cream, it ended up with a cinnamon bar/long john filled with apple pie filling. The flavor was good then the ratio was right. I know they are new but the filling was non existent on one side and too much on the other. Experience filling donuts will fix this.
The chocolate frosted is a hard donut to not to get right. The problem with the larger donuts ( both around and tall) is the icing being to little for the donut. This donut should have been so much better. I could figure out of it was the dough or what, but it was too much plain yeast donut and too little frosting. Keeping that in mind they are all put in one of those foil pans so the frosting (which is 30 cents extra) comes off when removing them. It doesn't look great and there isn't enough of it.
My other complaint the packaging on a single donut in a plastic clam shell, that's a lot of plastic and if they were trying to keep them looking pretty, that can't happen when the frosting pulls off on the other donuts in the pan.
I do think the kinks will be worked out. The owner/manager was pushing the coffee, which i get coffee is a money maker, but there are dozens of good coffee places. We need excellent donuts. I look forward to a revisit in a few months to see if some of the issues...
Read moreIt's so good. Nice, large, fresh donuts. These donuts are mostly the traditional yeast variety, about double the size of KK or DD. I thought they had a good ratio of donut to icing/glaze, not excessively sweet. And the filled donuts had a proper amount of cream or jelly. It would be nice to have a clearer differentiation between the premium and regular donuts, as the premium are not included the 1/2 doz. special. Service was very friendly, though it is a tight space and could cause a constricted line during busy times. They only have 6-8 varieties at one time, so don't expect to order 2 dozen expecting all...
Read moreWe tried out the Donut Kitchen while in Charlottesville visiting family. We got a box of 1 dozen assorted, and every flavor was so delish! The blueberry donut had real blueberries blended into it, the apple filled was scrumptious, and the seasonal flavor salted caramel was an unexpected delight. They were much more fresh than chain donut stores, and it was such a pleasure to support a local business. The coffee drinks were excellent as well! We will definitely stop by again whoever we’re in...
