So , these donuts are in regular rotation as one of my "guilty pleasures" and I frequent this specific Streeterville area location to get my "fix" when I need it. I usually have an exceptional in store customer service experience, every time that I visit . Though the lines are usually long, mainly because of the compact size of the store, the wait is often extremely short, due to the front of the house being adequately staffed to handle the influx of customers. Today, this was NOT the case!!
Though still technically lunch hour, because this location is directly on the campus of Northwestern Hospital, the lunch hour for businesses in this particular area is usually extended beyond the normal time. That being said, though I was next in line to be served, it was clear that the customer ahead of me was ordering quite a bit and there was only ONE person working the counter. Consequently, the line began to grow exponentially . To add to the wait, a delivery driver came into the store, trying to engage the one employee behind the counter in conversation. This employee politely directed him to two men seated and talking at a table outside of the store and he told the driver that both of the men seated at the table were his "managers" . Meanwhile, this one employee at the counter, is struggling to complete this long order, yet remaining cognizant of the growing line and I could see the concern on his face over the size of the line. I finally placed and received my order and exited the store and went over to one of the two male "managers", who was still sitting at the table, while the other had walked away and was on a phone call. I asked the man if he was a manager and he acknowledged that he was. I then asked him if he and his colleague could see how crowded it was, as I knew they clearly could, and I asked why one of them wasn't stepping in to assist the poor guy, inside at the counter, with bringing the line down. This "manager" said , "Ma'am, we are quite capable of handling the line" I told him, "Well, therein lies the problem, because there is NO 'WE' handling the line. There's only one poor guy in there struggling to handle the line" The manager then stated, "I'm the boss and we're having a meeting". I suggested that they should pause their meeting to assist their employee, by helping to make sure that the customers aren't standing there waiting exorbitantly, as they were. I then asked him his name and he dismissively told me, "have a nice day ma'am!" I said, "So, you're not going to give me your name?" He again stated, " I'm the boss and have a nice day ma'am! " I quickly responded by letting him know, in no uncertain terms that he may be a "boss" in title, but that a REAL boss would know how and when to assess that his assistance is needed, not just for the employee's sake but for the sake of the customers as well. He again, dismissively said, "Ma'am have a nice day!" I then called him an a- hole to his face and walked off. I am completely astounded by this wannabe Manager's response. He clearly has ZERO respect for his fellow employees nor the clientele at this establishment, who, by the way, pay $20+ for a half dozen donuts. He and the other "manager" should be ashamed of themselves! I have also reported this incident to their Corporate Offices and am awaiting a response. On a more positive note, I would like to say KUDDOS to Ryan W (looking at my receipt), who served me inside of the store, for still remaining pleasant and positive under such adverse and hectic circumstances. You're a ROCK...
Read moreI'm so glad we walked passed another nearby donut shop for these Do-Rite donuts!! We will definitely return our next trip to Chicago!
The donuts are so delicious that my 2 older kids asked me to write a review! My 10 yr old loves glazed donuts but not how overly sweet they can be. She was sad to eat the last glazed vanilla donut but didn't hesitate to do so, even on Day 3. Tiny vanilla beans are sparse in the glaze, but there are some.
I really liked the pistachio lemon, wayy better than the other donut shop around the corner! My kids didn't like this flavor. The pistachios were plentiful, and the lemon icing wasn't too sweet.
The pumpkin spice with cream cheese filling was on par. Not too much flavor from any, very well balanced.
To my surprise, the apple cider spice wasn't too sweet at all! It was enjoyable. The flavor of spice was mild, more cinnamon based.
The apple fritter is a must get!! The chunks of diced apples, the balanced sweet glaze (not too sweet!), and the perfect donut batter....we all enjoyed this!
My guest really enjoyed the chocolate glazed that had a dollop of ganache! She also enjoyed the birthday cake, which was a plain donut with white icing and sprinkles. She also got an apple fritter, and really didn't want to save it to share with her spouse haha.
It's not advertised that buying 1/2 dozen or full dozen has discounted prices. A new employee was learning, so he selected each to help us figure out pricing and what was worth our money. He even made sure my pistachio donuts was well topped with chopped nuts, not the residual tiny crushed nuts! We were bummed we had breakfast beforehand and didn't have the appetite to get a sandwich. We will definitely return to try these sandwiches and indulge in more fritters and donuts again! So many flavors and donuts left, even at 11am on a Sun! There were at least 3-5 other flavors we didn't get, but we totally would get if we were with a 3rd or 4th person.
The indoor seating is very cramped. If people are standing while others are seated, it wouldn't be easy to pass through. The outdoor seating is very quaint in front of the restaurant, which sits at a corner of the building, not completely shielded from weather elements. If it were to rain or storm, some seats and tables wouldn't be comfortable...
Read moreWhen it comes to Chicago donuts, IMHO no one compares to DoRites.
Conveniently located in Streeterville across from Northwestern Memorial ER, their donut disappointed me 2x times. Their Boston creme, the donut fab, the creme...I must have missed it. I tried it twice. Sadly, the company failed to respond to me about it.
So, it's apple time now. Michigan Apple Fritter. (I'm tearing up from excitement writing this.) I'm not huge into sweets, but this donut sounds heavenly.
Apples, cinnamon, no nuts, and made with love, I'm sure. Sugar, definitely.
I took this bad boy home to cut it up. No way am I going to consume it all at once. If I stayed here in the outside seating and ate it, I wouldhave downed it. Then go in a get their gluten-free chocolate, their glazed, and any other that I could wolf down. Control, Elle. Control. (But, their so good)
The fritter was 123g which is 4.25 ounces...yes 1/4 of a pound. (No wonder I'm not eating it all at once.)
I input my purchase into MyFitnessPal, and I swear the app laughed at me.
The donut was listed as 500 calories and no other info listed. Ruh-roh That's not good.
I looked on DoRites website, but no nutritional info given. I guess a donut shop (who puts a deep-fried chicken breast on a glazed donut) does not exactly boast nutritional facts, but it would be nice.
Here's the deal. I tore a small piece off this donut. It was insane. Delecatable. It took everything in me to not continue to eat it. Instead, I cut it into small pieces and froze them for treats later.
Boring, Elle, I know. But everything in moderation.
The donut was fresh, very sweet, cinnamon-y and definitely taste the apple. The texture perfection.
Would I buy it again? Annually, yes. Next time I return I'll probably grab a gfree or a glazed. I'd LOVE to re-buy the Boston creme IF they promise to have the creme in it. Honestly, I'm long overdue for their chicken...
