If this is where the art of today is headed, I’m worried. Words that popped into my mind included grotesque, absurd, meaningless, and dark.
It was just hard to find joy in viewing this art. From whole swathes of the museum dedicated to violent shooter simulations (in the Iraq war), to videos in dark rooms of concerned faces, inanimate objects with hair and boils, framed messes of actual hair itself, distorted humanoid forms, heads split into two, machines for impalement, many things in a state of decay (I think I could smell the first heaping exhibit rotting too), colorless, putrid themes throughout, sadness and time bygone.
Contemporary art, I get it now, is to challenge notions (and make you think!). However, it seems to take that too literally and just make things the opposite. If something is beautiful, give it lots of bad traits. If something is putrid or vile, it should be considered good and more valuable in this realm. If something is so usual or so random, that it doesn’t seem aesthetic or that ingenious, but is given an edgy meaning, it is good. I would not want to train myself to think this way.
In general, the experience gave me the feeling of an insane asylum. The small rooms. Eery, dark vibes. You don’t know the next freaky thing you’re going to see or experience. Whether it’s creepy dolls, decayed clothing of children, or rooms with guns and beds. It just doesn’t feel like a healthy state of mind.
I found some of the museum staff watching the exhibits to be rude. You may be yelled at for minor things. The museum was smaller than expected too. Though I may not be too disappointed looking back that it ended sooner.
Overall, I’ll give two stars, because there is clearly effort/skill to the art and there is interest to find here and there. But I will leave off the rest of the stars because the museum seems to focus on contemporary art as mainly disturbing, grotesque things. Whereas I would like to see if there could be (a good bit) less focus on that, but also see if there could be more pieces that demonstrate more aesthetics and beauty (which is very subjective). I didn’t see enough pieces that you could call eye-catching.
As well, I didn’t see many pieces that addressed any real or important issues of our contemporary times, especially in a constructive way. I would like to see more pieces that think about these challenging and important issues and ideas, instead of creating obscure, meaningless things, which elicit responses more simply like Yuck, or What is this.
However, let me say that I don’t dislike all modern/contemporary art quite as much. I did go to the Art Institute of Chicago (based on other recommendations here) and found many of the contemporary works especially nice and interesting to view. I also like Modern Art as well, which I have viewed most recently in Atlanta at the High Museum of Art, which contained many colorful,...
