I'd have to say my meal here was one of my favourites while visiting Chicago.
It's not the best meal I've ever had, but it comforted me in many ways and made me feel nostalgic of my upbringing in Singapore. To me that means alot, and it rarely happens. I'm not going to argue that maybe there are more authentic or well-rounded restaurants nearby, but for what this place is in itself, I left with a happy soul.
I ordered the oxtail noodle soup with hand shaved noodles, and it was everything I needed.
The broth felt well rounded and had great depth. The seasonings definitely caught me off guard, but I was about it. There was for sure some anise in there, and I swore I could taste cinnamon at times. If that bit of info scares you or you're worried it will taste weird, pho also has cinnamon and anise. Everyone loves pho right? My partner ordered theirs spicy, and it had a little more depth than the regular without being excessively spicy.
The noodles were perfectly cooked, with only a few softer bits once I got to the very end of my bowl. If you're unfamiliar with hand shaved noodles, I'd almost compare them to the dumpling bits in chicken and dumplings (the flat versions cooked in the mix). They're a little more delicate, but thicker, than hand pulled noodles.
The oxtail bits admittedly might be disappointing for someone looking for a meat packed dish. There wasn't as much meat on it as there could have been, but the broth really made the bits enjoyable to slurp on. Also they're nearly impossible to eat with chopsticks alone unless you want to get soup splashed all over your clothes. No shame in using your hands, at least for me.
The few bits of baby bok choy were a good contrast to the heartiness of the oxtail. There was just enough in the soup, and the pieces were never too big to manage.
The only downsides to our visit were the dumplings and lack of condiments. The pork & celery dumplings could have been better, but it didn't bother me much. They were just okay. As for the condiments, I didn't even realize the pickled mustard greens existed until seeing some of the pictures here! My fault for not knowing and asking, but man I wish I tried it!
WORD OF CAUTION- Be careful eating the little bits left at the end of the bowl. There are pods of anise in there that can be mistaken for bits of meat, and they are REAL strong. It's pretty hard for your taste buds to...
Read moreIf you taste their food and don't like it, you're paying full price regardless. (No discount, no replacement) And beware when you ask for water. They serve room temperature tap water that tastes like the pipes of Chicago.
My sister and I went into this establishment on a Friday night. We had ordered the duck and spicy seafood ramen bowls and side orders of kimchi. They said they were out of kimchi and the other alternatives they had recommended. No problem whatever The issue started when I received my duck bowl, the duck itself was slimy and full of bones and the noodles were sweet. The only thing I partially consumed was the broth. I expressed my concern and told them I did not like my bowl which our waitress simply apologized and walked away. Another waitress came over and asked if we need containers for my seemingly untouched ramen. When I told her there was no reason for a container as I didn't like the bowl of ramen she just stared at me not like she didn't understand but in shock of what I said. She walked away after what it felt like a staring contest. Feeling uncomfortable and wanting to leave, I asked to pay. I was prepared to pay half price for the duck ramen that was barely touched HOWEVER, they made me pay full price. I asked for a reason on why, and they simply said they couldn't give me a discount on the food. I mentioned that I barely touched the food as 90% was still remaining and it wasn't good. Still no Already feeling sick of the duck broth and uncomfortable, I paid and left. I learned my lesson
I am disappointed with the quality of food, and service (which they never came to check on us until they gave the bill. We flagged our waitress for extra napkins twice and she...
Read moreDelicious noodles, but obviously DO NOT know how to maintain the relationship with customers. Have to admit that they have good ramen, or the best type of ramen in Chicago, but their service is quite poor.
Today was one of my many visits, but I would say never again. My friend was here after dinner, so she accompanied me for my dinner this time.
Not sure if one of us didn't order noodles (we DID order other appetizer) was the reason, the young waitress (yes, she was so RUDE all the time) didn't give us water the previous visit. This time I asked for water and after that she FINALLY brought it to us.
Apparently they were not happy that I was the only one who ordered noodles. The ridiculous thing was that my tomato and egg noodles were eaten by ONLY THREE chopsticks. However, customer sit next to me obviously had more amount than my bird size food.
I don’t know if they were worried that two of us would eat one bowl of noodles. They are clearly there to prevent this.
Or I'm guessing if they were sexist, thought women have smaller appetite than men even though it's the same price for a bowl of noodles smh.
The service was also poor EVERY SINGLE TIME. They even argued with us today once I cannot add extra noodles after my poor food size. The reason they told us was the chef cannot do that. Gosh, it's so pathetic for the poor cook to take such a fake blame for this.
Rudeness doesn't hide their tacit dissatisfaction with us. In short, it's ridiculous that a stingy restaurant tried to have a foothold in Chinatown.
Well, congrats on the loss of a loyal customer, we won't be...
