📍Small Cheval has a new location! Same quality food has landed in Lincoln Square. // #fabfoodchicago #smallcheval #chicagoeats #burgers #chicagoburgers #lincolnsquare

I went here around 1pm a on Monday a few weeks ago (not a holiday) and was super disappointed tbh. Before this, I had only been to the small cheval in wicker and it was AMAZING, so I had high expectations. I waited 22 mins for my food when it wasn't busy (no line). I understand being understaffed and having a small kitchen, but that seems like way too long. If the food was good, I probably wouldn't complain about how long I had to wait for it. I ordered the signature double with bacon. It was COLD. Let me start by explaining that I'm very sensitive to temperature hot food so I prefer my food to be lukewarm. I got my patty right when the dinger when off so it wasn't sitting there. When I took a bite, it was so cold that it felt refrigerated. I checked the meat to make sure it was actually cooked (it was, thankfully), but I'm not sure how it got that cold. The burger was $13 and not worth it. I won't be back to any of their locations due to my experience here. It was just plain bad. Their aioli is the only reason I was able to get the burger down (that, paired with being absolutely starving). I've had better burgers from Wendy's tbh. I was also annoyed at the other patrons who insisted on feeing the birds. It's a real problem. I began by sitting at an uncovered table and moved to a covered one when it freed up after a bird nearly pooped on me. Stop feeding the birds! Have signs that say that! Like, do something. It's obnoxious. The workers were friendly, the place was clean, but that's all I can really say.

I feel sad leaving this review, because I once loved and fiercely defended Cheval burgers. But, the quality has gone down lately, at least here in Old Town. Got two cheeseburgers today and both were over cooked to the point of being gray pucks of meat with a burnt crunchy shell. I can excuse an one-off disappointment, but my friends’ were the same. Fries were ok but way over-salted. Then I had to go back, because they forgot one of my friends milk shake and bottled water. The guy there asked to see my receipt for the bottle of water because it wasn’t printed on the bag (like I was trying to scam him for a bottle of water (and I even had just tipped this same guy 15% for carryout)). It was almost $90+ for four burnt burger, fries, pop, water, and milkshakes. On top of that they don’t tell you they add a service charge to your bill for even carry out (dine in doesn’t have service either so not sure how that would even apply). Regardless, I would have been happy to tip extra had the burgers have been like how they used to be, but dry burgers, bad service, and a hidden charge really makes me think that the “Cheval” name is all that there is left to the once great burger place.

I recently had the opportunity to dine at Small Cheval, and overall, I must say the experience was quite enjoyable. The ambiance of the place is warm and inviting, with an emphasis on creating a relaxed, casual atmosphere.

First things first, let's talk about the food. I decided to try their Wagyu burger, which came highly recommended. Although the burger itself was cooked to perfection, I must admit that it didn't quite taste like the average Wagyu I've had before. It was still juicy and flavorful, but it lacked the distinct richness I associate with this premium meat. Despite this, the quality of the ingredients and the skillful preparation of the dish left me feeling satisfied.

The service at Small Cheval was commendable. Our server was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. They made sure our orders were taken promptly and checked on us periodically throughout our meal, ensuring we were content.

However, there was one drawback to our dining experience: the limited seating. The restaurant's popularity seems to have outgrown its capacity, as it was quite challenging to find a place to sit. It would be great to see Small Cheval expand its seating area to accommodate more guests comfortably.

Overall, I would recommend Small Cheval for a laid-back meal with friends or family. While the Wagyu burger might not have met my expectations, the good service and cozy atmosphere made up for it. I'll be returning to try some of their other menu offerings...

My two friends and I visited this restaurant on Friday, July 28, 2024, just after a rainstorm had passed. Although some tables were still wet, the staff had cleaned a few, and people were seated. We asked an employee if we could use napkins to dry a table and sit down. The employee responded, “No, we do not waste napkins because it will rain again.” This made sense since the rain had just stopped and could start again.

While deciding on another place for dinner, we saw another customer ask the same employee if the staff could clean a table for their group right after us. This time, the employee agreed, and someone cleaned the table. The tables were large, so after it was cleaned, my friends and I joined the other customers, and we all sat together for dinner.

I don't intend to make any accusations against the restaurant or its employees, but this incident left me with a wrong impression. I have been to this restaurant many times and enjoy supporting local businesses. They add vibrancy to our neighborhood. It would have been better if the employee had explained why they initially refused our request but agreed to clean the table for another customer who came after us.

I am writing this review because I hope the restaurant will train its staff to ensure similar incidents don't happen in the future. As a Chicagoan, I believe businesses in our city should reflect our values of respect and hospitality, welcoming everyone....
