I was treating my siblings to the Hallelujah Gospel Brunch as part of my Christmas present to them. We arrived for our 11:00am reservation on time and were surprised by how quiet and empty the restaurant was. Music was playing but there were no signs of an organist or a sing-a-long as expected. It was our first time here so we assumed it would be starting eventually. Halfway through our meal, when we finally asked our server when the organist was starting, we were only then informed that there would be no live music for 2 weeks. While the food and service were excellent, I feel that at some point while making the reservation the Wednesday before, or when we entered the restaurant, we should have been informed of the change. If we chose to keep our reservation then it would have been our choice. Again, the decor, catchy menu selections, food and service were all excellent but we also went for the experience and we didn’t get our Hallelujahs. If I just wanted to have breakfast with my siblings we could have gone anywhere. Next time a little transparency would be...

This location was a neighborhood store, and then for a decade or so a candy store, and while the candy is gone, the place is one that you can get a tasty treat for lunch or dinner. If you are in the area, it is a higher-end experience than most other nearby establishments. If you are familiar with the area you know it is one with only limited street parking as Morgan Street is a smaller two-lane street and the stretch of businesses at that point is just three blocks with residences mixed in between. If you are Chicago savvy - you know the area in recent years has improved from a street crimes standpoint, so that's the good news -- and you will be comfortable. For those not savvy, taking cabs or ride-share services, you are not likely to notice any issues -- particularly for lunch or an early dinner. Oh -- and there is a very unique Chicago mural that reflects the political history of Bridgeport and its mayoral...

tl;dr: The food was fantastic, service was excellent, and the atmosphere was wonderful.

Long version: I went there with my brother and happened to eat during one of their gospel brunches. The owner was singing with the musician and I had one of their St. Benedict eggs benedict (including the processional). The eggs benedict consist of three poached eggs sitting on some very nice sausage, over a thick slice of bread and topped with a hollandaise sauce. They bring out a portrait of Pope Benedict with candles, so that you can "dine with the pope".

I sampled my brothers creme brulee french toast... I've never heard of it before and it was fantastic. I had such a good time that I followed up my initial order with a steak and creme brulee. Both were very, very good.

Over all, it was wonderful! I have never had more fun having brunch (or had such a hard time walking...

Ladies and gentlemen of the internet just so you know we have two different cities in Chicago... There is the north side and there is the south side. In my opinion one is not better than the other but truly they are distinctly different. As a note... we also have the west side but it is comprised of bits of both the north and the south for the most part. I attended a jazz concert in the banquet hall at the Polo Inn and was pretty much totally unprepared for what I ended up being blessed to experience. Perfect service, perfect food, amazingly beautiful room and everything tended to with delicate and highly skilled care. This institution offers the very best aspects of both the north side of Chicago and the south side of Chicago and is a unifying force in this city and represents the very best that we have to offer. Highest praise for this institution. Period.

This is a neighborhood gem. Always evolving with the times and has been a cornerstone of South Morgan Street for decades. I used to work here as a teenager and the consistency in the food preparation is just as strong as it ever was. (Rent Hoodlum when you have a chance and look for the scene where the restaurant was reimagined for the film.) Everything was flavorful and well-portioned. The walls are adorned with photos that brought back so many memories of good times and friends. This will always be a great place to go for any meal. It is bolstered by the adjoining banquet hall and has wonderful rooms for a bed and breakfast style getaway within the city limits. Be sure to check out the amazing place that Chef/Owner Dave Samber has maintained since 1985. It is and always will be "Something different. Something wonderful."
