I couldn’t wait to leave a review for this restaurant. It’s been on our radar since we were tipped on this place which had received stellar praise ever since they opened. Some time ago, another spot located in Barrio Logan offered similar pizzas with Birria. For one reason or another, they closed before we could try them. Fortunately, we stumbled across PEJ (Pizzeria El Jefe) and called in a takeout order. We ordered the $38.99 El Jefe Special which included a large 16” pizza of your choice (we chose their popular La Vaca Flaca—traditional Birria, Birria juice, diced onion & radish, and garnish of cilantro & lime), El Jefe garlic & butter dough balls, and choice of Alitas Wings (we chose the Buffalo sauce extra crispy). I met the owner, Anna, upon picking up our order. She was very nice, thanked me for patronizing her small business, and greeted me Happy New Year.
Upon arrival at home, the pizza was very delicious! It was still hot, fresh, and not soggy. We were given an ample amount of mild & hot sauce, and Birria juice as well. Their pizza crust is baked to perfection, and it was very tasty, which complimented the toppings wonderfully. Their wings were absolutely delicious. The dough balls, if you can eat them while still hot/warm will activate your taste buds with even more flavor. All in all, the prices were very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Food, service, and the dining area were all A+ as far as I could tell. The entire business was clean, Anna was the only one working since we came shortly after they opened. Parking was plentiful in their private parking lot. I bet most of their customers order takeout, they do have tables to dine-in, and is adequate but I can tell you, if you like Mexican food, Birria, carnitas; and you also like pizza and/or wings, PEJ will probably be a huge hit for you! The flavor in their food is off the charts delicious! We can’t wait to try many of their...
Read moreWow! We can't get enough of this place. Imagine some of the tastiest taco meats possible and then imagine putting those meats on top of a pizza with melty cheese instead of inside a tortilla.
We took out a pizza before our movie on a whim and were immediately blown away (the mar and tierra). The topping on its own was extremely flavorful, unlike a lot of taco places where the meats are lackluster and you have to drown your taco in a salsa for flavor. We're given an avocado salsa and a spicy salsa, but the pizza didn't need an assist from any extra sauces at all, although I did enjoy dipping my crust in the salsas they provided. The crust was crispy with a wonderful hit of Garlic. The crust isn't a thin crust or very doughy or chewy like Coscto's fantastic dough. It is a mix between Chuck E Cheese, Peter Piper Pizza, and Pizza Hut and it is very good. My husband and I can't stop thinking or telling everyone about this place. We immediately posted pictures and shared with our family and my husband took a bunch of menus into work.
We came back another day to eat with our friend, and we got to experience their delightful staff since we dined in. It's a friendly and chill vibe inside the restaurant. They let us do a half/half pizza so we could try out more of their specialties. We did the birria and chorizo this time. They had just finished making a batch of birria, and it was to die for on a pizza. The chorizo did outshine the birria though. That's saying a lot when their birria was very good. We enjoyed the flavor and the crispyness of the toasted chorizo.
The pizzas are a bit pricey, but they are very generous with their toppings, so we felt it was worth it when we thought about how little we get in some taco places and have to order a handful to fill us up for a meal. 3 of us shared one large pizza, and we still had leftover slices to take home. We can't wait to treat ourselves to more...
Read moreThis place is one of the bigger reasons why South Bay is up and coming. My gf and I have come here twice, both times we have been thoroughly impressed by the menu. Birrieria on a pizza? Never seen that before. Chorizo on a pizza? Sorry MaMaMia, this place has you in checkmate.
I think one thing for new comers to keep in mind is that this place does not serve your standard pizza ingredients, but rather nuance premium ingredients. That being said, expecting food to be done as fast as McDonalds or any other fast food place is a mistake. Give a solid half hour time, 45 mins even, from placing an order to pick up time. Trust me, it will be worth it. You can't rush the good things in life.
I WANT to give this place 5 stars, but granted the current context (quarantine/pandemic) I can't honestly justify it, but I will say that once things (hopefully) return back to normal I will be sure to return and experience the dine-in and/or mini bar with Mexican inspired craft brews. See you guys again then, but not before we enjoy more of...
