Greenhouse Café in Citrus Heights was just added to our short list of favorite places for food. Tasty, well-prepared, nicely presented, fresh food is primary when adding to our list but we also consider ambiance, appearance and service.
We ordered coffee, a regular and a decaf (the bill shows "Americano"). Best coffee, ever (outside of Europe)! Espresso base, nicely prepared, right temperature. With each coffee there was a pitcher filled with foamed cream.
Florentine Benedict: It was almost too beautiful to disturb on its white plate. Fundamental to Benedicts are the eggs and these two were done perfectly. Steamed in hot water in a cup, the white of each egg was fully collected around the yoke and the egg was cooked just right. Beneath each egg was a small amount of spinach and then the muffin. The egg, spinach and muffin provided me with the taste of a Benedict perfectly prepared. On the plate was a mix of greens, tomato, a green olive with a light, oil-based dressing and also several cubes of nicely browned white potato.
Syrniki: Sour cream, home-cooked fruit compote, each in individual cups, and three cakes with a sprinkling of powdered sugar, all on a long, white plate made a lovely display. My partner put a spoonful of sour cream and then some sauce on a cake and then sampled her work. Her eyes confirmed that what she was tasting was very good. It was then I could see the cakes were stuffed with cottage cheese.
The restaurant is inviting with attractive and comfortable furniture arranged informally with well-cared-for plants everywhere. A green wall of dieffenbachia, pathos and ferns and others is just the right appointment in the conversation area. Display cases show tasty sweets which may be purchased to eat there or to take home. There is plenty of outdoor seating (more than shown), attractively arranged, all covered, promising an enjoyable outdoor meal or the sharing of a coffee and pastry any time of day.
We had come for breakfast but we will definitely be back soon for brunch again or to try a lunch entrée. Service was attentive although our meals required minimum service. What's to love about this restaurant? The food, the delicious, unique and beautiful food, satisfying to both the tongue and eyes. The overall "feel" of the restaurant warrants staying a while even when the plate is empty. But, the draw for us is the sense that the owners and staff care and it is their intention every visitor is appreciated and enjoys their visit. And, it is the food, so good, so beautiful, so tasty, so lovingly presented that beckons us to...
Read moreI went here on 11/18 for my birthday breakfast and was throughly disappointed. High review ratings and pictures is what drew me to pick here to start my special day. When me and my friend come to order at the front the staff look annoyed someone is at the counter and kind of look at us slyly. We go and pick a spot to wait and eat at. My friend’s food comes and it looks great. My food comes and it isn’t as described on their menu in person. The menu in person says the stuffed French toast with Nutella comes with strawberries. Mine came with raspberries and I can’t stand those and wouldn’t have ordered or asked for no raspberries. When we finally ask them to bring strawberries they’re like sorry. Nothing else just a short forced sorry like I was bugging them. When I finally get to try my French toast I realize it is burnt. At this point I’m already disappointed at the lack of concern. When I go to the counter to ask for better French toast that isn’t charred like a steak they’re like oh ok. Now when I receive my fresh French toast it’s 45 minutes after initially ordered the first one. When I get it they just say a short awkward sorry. Both sorrys sounds like when you have to and you don’t care. Although the inside is pretty and the food is supposed to be aesthetically pleasing, the service from the staff ruined the experience. Feels like any complaint was brushed off and met with a begrudgingly attitude and solution. Feels like people aren’t supposed to come and enjoy food and hospitality. Has to be some of the worst hospitality I have seen in a long time. Which is sad because this location is in a diverse area and to be serving our community with brown and black people as well and have a sour attitude is sad. I hope they can learn and treat their customers better. If I could go back to my birthday I would have just went to chain restaurant instead of being...
