Very disappointed about this place. I was introduced to this spot back in 2009 when it was excellent. They had a Jamaican person in the back, grilling. I forget his name, but he was really cool. This place also used to make candied yams that were absolutely out of this world. However, for some reason, they stopped. I used to come there to get a platter of the jerk chicken, with mac n yams for $9.99. I was there within the last month and they stopped cooking candied yams and even the pricing is different.
They still have the jerk chicken which I really like when cooked correctly and that spicy sauce is applied. However, I have seen Spanish people in the back now and it is not the same. Not even sure if you can even get the mac n cheese anymore. Forget the yams since they never make it anymore. I used to come down from Rye just to get it before the evening rush gets there and takes all the yams lol. Now, there are soul food places near me that have really good yams and really no need for me to go there anymore. Certain cuisines should have certain people serving the food. When there is a change in that department, that is always a signal to go elsewhere because certain cuisines are cooked a...
Read moreI had the small jerk chicken with rice and peas, steamed cabbage and oxtail gravy over the rice. It cost 13.50 for the meal. Value-wise, pretty big portion. I think two light eating people could share this for lunch. I eat heavy and could’t finish a big piece of chicken at the end.
Positives: big portions, not salty, they use the grill outside to give it that extra flavor, and the chicken dark meat pieces were not dry at all, and the white meat parts were not overly dry. Some small parts dry but I think thats to be expected for the thin parts on a grill.
The jerk seasoning on the chicken was on the mild side, and a little muted, but there was a great smoky quality from the outdoor grill. The rice and peas, not bad. I didn’t have a negative customer service experience, they were pleasant.
I would rate my single dish as decent. Not the best jerk chicken or rice and peas I have had, but for the...
