tl;dr: awesome spot, reasonably-priced, delicious food, great service. wonderful neighborhood gem!
we were debating btw this place and another spot, but this place ultimately won because i got drawn in by one thing and one thing only: the steak frites. the place was cozy and romantic, with a few tabled already occupied. they're currently offering an inflation buster prix-fix menu, for 1 app and 2 mains for $60 and that's what we went with.
we got the following to try:
-BBQ ranch chicken nachos: huge portion! juicy chicken breast strips, pico de gallo, ranch, bbq sauce, and melty cheese on crunchy tortilla chips. the pico had a nice tang to it, it wasn't your typical lime juice but i can't seem to put a finger on it. but really good! i do think it's better to cut the chicken into cubes than strips tho, for better chicken-to-nacho distribution ratio.
-steak frites: comes perfectly cooked as requested (medium rare), served with bearnaise, fries, and garlic aioli. the steak was thick, meaty, and tender. the bearnaise sauce was awesome. we loved the garlic aioli and it paired well with the crispy fries. HIGHLY recommend this one!
-brick chicken: seared, deboned half chicken (except the drumette, for presentation), served with baby potatoes, and mushroom/spinach in a marsala wine sauce. the chicken was nicely seared and juicy (yes, even the chicken breast), but a tad too salty for my taste. the marsala wine sauce was rich and creamy, but it does get a little heavy after a few bites.
-lemon sugar crepe: light, tangy, refreshing.
i also tried a cocktail but can't seem to remember the name of it for the life of me. i believe it was gin-based, with some kind of citrus. it was really tasty and well-balanced too.
service was awesome, food was delicious, huge portions (we had leftovers), and just a really wonderful neighborhood gem. would love to stop in again if we're...
Read moreThree of us decided to go to Ms. Fairfax on short notice right before dinner on a Sunday. Just to make sure we called ahead and even though there were no tables available to book online, they were able to find a spot and hold a table for us!
The place is quaint and cozy and we were seated right away. The server was very attentive and helpful. We ordered some drinks while we decided on our meals. My wife always got the "Purple Pixie" but now her new go-to is "Rosemary's Baby"...a spicy tequila and berry concoction with a kick of spice. Definitely recommend.
We ordered the Lumberjack (chicken sando), Chicken and Waffles and an Impossible Burger. The Lumberjack was very complex with picked onions, cucumber and a very subtle aioli on the softest bun ever. Oh, by the way, DO NOT SKIP THE FRIES...you will hate yourself if you don't get them and someone else at the table does. Trust me.
According to my son (a teenager) the waffles from the chicken and waffles were the best he ever had. I tried them too and will agree (as someone who has eaten A LOT more waffles in 50 years than the 17 year old) that they were some of the best I've ever tasted too! Don't forget to use the siracha syrup...it makes the dish.
Finally my wife's burger was equally great. Well prepared, soft bun, yummy fries, super-savory onions and mushrooms as well. Oh, the bun was gluten-free too and she said she almost couldn't tell! Not too many small places with a succinct menu like this can offer a full meal that's vegan and gluten-free.
Overall, a wonderful, tasty, relaxing meal with great service and few yummy drinks to top it off! Ms. Fairfax is on our rotation of go-to places in the area and it should be...
Read moreNo just no. This place is just a big no. I came here to brunch with my 5 year daughter. With that said, I bought her pancakes added the bananas added a scrambled egg side and sausage side. The eggs were good the sausage she couldn’t eat it was spicy and had a lot of herbs in it. What annoyed me was that the waiter didn’t warn me that the bananas were not ready to be eaten and were still green. So I paid extra for bananas to toss out. It also annoyed me that The waiter didn’t warn me about the sausage being spicy and herby. Hello little person at the table she’s a great eater but still a child. Then I ordered for myself the berry yogurt. Again nasty. It was a giant mess. In a big enough bowl was a glop of Greek yogurt with strawberries, blueberry’s and a light drizzle of honey. That was it. When the menu said it was supposed to have the fruit plus granola, walnuts and jam. I told the waiter and all she did was bring me a little granola. Honestly, I wanted the crunch factor and didn’t get any of that. After the lack of crunch I just couldn’t eat it. I didn’t even want to ask for more honey because I was so annoyed. I wanted to love this place but I just can’t and will not return for any other meals. If you want to over pay for food that just is amazingly presented but not even that...
