The only thing I can recommend about this place is MAKE RESERVATINS! Was a bit last minute and the only reservation we could get same day was at the bar. It was before the orchestra, and it really is a tiny place so even the bar was fully reserved. The bar is normally not a favorite, but it was actually fun. We met 2 ladies that are regular customers and was very nice chatting with them over cocktails. Excellent bartender, and I hear he was just a stand in.
The menu is not huge, but from my friends in the industry no establishment can be all things to all people. If you want a huge selection, go to Denny's. If you want good food, look to places that do fewer things, but do them well. I'm a very picky eater and there were more than enough choices for me.
OK, the food, very good. The caprese and casa salads are both excellent choices. There was a special on black pasta with shrimp, it looked wonderful, and my friend enjoyed it. I had the Scaloppina al funghi, and it was also very good. Tartufo al cioccalato was desert, end of a very enjoyable meal.
So, next trip to little Italy, if you like good food and service, think ahead and book yourself a table. I see that they are 'only' 4.6, so keep in mind that (a) everyone is entitled to a bad night and (b) some people really have unrealistic expectations.
We were a bit late, called and they held our spot open for us. Even though we were running late, we did have time for a drink and 3 courses, never felt rushed and still made it to Severance Hall with a few...
Read moreMy dinner companion recomended Etna last evening as a late night spot to attend after a concert at Severance Hall. We ventured inside this corner comfy homestyle Italian eatery just a few minutes before before 11 pm and were greeted warmly by our host Carlo who recomended a few dishes and a sparkling Muscato from Sardegna, Italy: Dolci Note (Translated Sweet Notes)
We were served a delectable appetizer of Calamari tubes grilled on arugula. The Calamari was the finest I've ever tried; it was so tender it practically melted upon a salad of large arugala leaves laced with extra virgin olive oil and meyer lemon juice locally procured from Sirna and sons distributors. Our main courses were brought out presently: a Cioppino (prepared with clams, mussels shrimp calamari and braised salmon with homemade tomato sauce and Chardonnay from Venezia Giulia.) and a Black ink spaghetti (imported from Salerno, Italy) made with cherry tomatoes, fresh shrimp and scampi. Chef/proprietor Peppe Pilumeli is originally from Catania (Sicily); he opened Etna six years ago this April and credits his success in due part to the influence of his brother-in-law Valerio Iorio -a Florentine chef. Our dinner was completed by a Tartufo made with gelato rolled in hazelnut truffles fabricated in coco powder, imported from Tuscany, and a homemade tiramisu (an original creation made with Grand Marnier aptly named Grand Marnier Coppa Dell’eta). The espresso machine was on the fritz so we settled for a...
Read moreMost excellent visit. I had read most of the reviews here on google prior to the visit and so was ready to have a huge wait (We did have a reservation – but some of the other reviewers did also.). We walked in to find several open tables and were shown to a table right away. The dining room and bar area were laid out nicely and the décor seemed to fit very well. Everything was clean and set correctly and the clientele there before us was an eclectic mixture of older and younger people with several groups that were celebrating. We had Liana as a server and she was awesome – there when it counted and not intrusive or overly attentive. She had a grasp of the basic menu items and suggested several great specials and parings. My wife went with the swordfish and spaghetti for myself. The Swordfish was incredible. It was fresh, done correctly and served up with asparagus that was perfectly grilled. I had a good-sized bowl of spaghetti and meat sauce that took me back to Europe. The price was pretty much in line with the quality and I would highly recommend this establishment for anyone wanting old world cooking in...
