Not much to say here, except this was honestly one of the worst ramens I've had in a while. The broth is bland and thin, with much to be desired in the fragrance department. I had to ask for salt at a ramen place. SALT AT A RAMEN PLACE. They didn't have any table side condiments either. The ramen wasn't even hot when it came out, just slightly above room temperature. My girlfriend, who normally cannot handle hot foods, took a huge bite without hesitation, which was immediately a red flag. The quality of broth and noodles was that of a low-popularity mall's food court Japanese stall. The noodles were also quite soggy. I usually demolish the first round of noodles, order more, and then finish the rest of my broth til I see the bottom of the bowl, but as you can see in the picture, I couldn't even finish the remaining noodles from round one. I had to take a break, then force myself to, just so I didn't go hungry later. The spice bomb was nothing more than ground pork, miso paste, and gochujang, and was not spicy in the slightest, and barely turned my broth orange. The toppings were decent, and the pork was actually not bad. The chicken karaage was nice and tender, which was the only saving grace.
Atmosphere was decent and the place was clean, but nothing special.
Service was not the best, as the wrong order was brought out for us, even when we were one of maybe 6 tables in the restaurant, half of which were already eating. Water was brought out slowly, and other than taking our empty karaage plate away, our server never came back to check on us even once, not even to refill our water, so I was sitting with an empty cup for 15 minutes, relying on the salt-flavored broth to stay hydrated.
Overall, not the best, or even good for that matter. Just a cash grab for hungry college students who are looking for convenience and don't know any better, or any better ramen spots. I honestly do not understand why this place has a rating...
Read moreDuring a business trip, I stumbled upon Onikama on the fringe of the University of Maryland. Craving some ramen, I decided to give it a try. Although the restaurant primarily caters to the campus crowd, it was summer, so the volume was low, making for a relaxed dining experience.
Onikama has a hip college atmosphere with anime decor, which I found quite charming. The ordering process is straightforward with a kiosk where you select your food from a simple menu that had exactly what I wanted. I opted for the Crispy Takoyaki as an appetizer and the Kuroi Oni Shinaji as my main course. The food arrived quickly and was served piping hot, with a professional and appealing presentation.
The Takoyaki was incredibly flavorful and delicious, setting high expectations for the ramen. The Kuroi Oni Shinaji did not disappoint either—perfectly cooked with abundant vegetables and noodles. Each bite was a delight.
Overall, I would definitely recommend Onikama and would gladly return. The food is the star here, and it shines brightly. If you’re looking for great ramen and delicious appetizers, this is the place to be. Just don’t expect much in terms of service, as the focus is clearly on the...
Read moreMy family came on a Tuesday evening to celebrate my 11 year old son’s birthday. He wanted Ramen for his birthday meal. When we entered, the gentlemen behind the bar asked how many in our party. When I told him, he did not take us to a table. We sat ourselves and that was fine. He brought us water and did not speak. This was our first time having this cuisine. After 10 min I went to him and asked to speak to a manager and he told me he was the assistant manager. I expressed that he did not great us or offer assistance in any way. I had to get up and ask for another jug of water. Then he asked how he could help after telling me that there are no servers here. He was on his phone primarily or watching the tv. He did return with more water for a third time after delivering the food but I had catch him before he rushed off to ask for to-go container. Running the restaurant or checking on customers was not his priority.
Only come to this restaurant if you know what this cuisine is, have no questions, and don’t want any interaction with the staff.
The food was delicious, so that is disappointing. My son enjoyed his birthday with us and his first “true” ramen meal. We will...
